Show SUNDAY SERVICES On Sunday afternoon services were lield in the Assembly Ha1lThe a opening hymn was that on page 16 To him who made the world The BUD the moon and stars And all that in them is With days andmop ths and years To Him who died That we might live Oar thanks and songs We freely give Prayer by President D 0 Calder The choir sang the hymn on page 156 I O God th Eternal Father Who dwells amid the sky In Jesus name we ask thee To bless and sanctify If we are just before thee This bread and cup of wine That we may all remember That off7ring so divine PRESIDENT WILLIAM BUDGE addressed ad-dressed the congregation He said those who read about the Latterday Saints in books and newspapers wondered how intelligent men and women could become members Qf the Mormon church It was unpopular unpop-ular to be a Latterday Saint Belief Be-lief in the gospel was unpopular and it was therefore necessary that one who embraced the gospel should know that it was true before sacrificing sacri-ficing the fellowship and friendship of his relatives and those who were near and dear to him There was nothing to lead an honest man or woman to embrace the gospel but an honest conviction that it came from God The proof of its truth was made manifest by the elders who taught it to the world In the case of other sects the gospel of Christ had not been taught as it was in the days of Jesus The gospel had been taken from the earth because men had turned fro n the Lord and departed de-parted from the simple system of salvation given by him In consequence conse-quence of that departure the people i were nowdestitute of that absolute knowledge which marked the difference I differ-ence between Christs church and i the religious systems of the world God had revealed a plan of salvation salva-tion Its principles were taught by Jesus It was a perfect system having come from the Perfect Being The world had forsaken many of the laws of that system and as a consequence lost the spirit of the Lord What are the laws the obeying of which brings salvation One of them was faith in Christ in I his doctrines in the Atonement of I Jesus another was repentance of all sin withdrawal from all that was evil He who had faith in Christ and had repented of his sins had the privilege of being baptized by one having authority for the remission of sins These were the first principles of that perfect system revealed from heaven and the blessings promised could not be obtained without accepting ac-cepting them jo one should expect ex-pect to enjoy the spirit of Christ while his sins were upon him and that great gift and blessing could be obtained in no other way than that pointed out by the Lord namely by repentance and baptism by immersion im-mersion for the remission of sins This principle was believed and taught by the saints but not by the professors of other religions In this day God had restored his original gospel in its purity and commanded that it be preached to the world as a witness of the near approach of the coming of the Sin of Man God promised to those who repented and were baptized the gift of the Holy Ghost which revealed things past and present and made manifest things to come The blessing was never conferred except upon believers in and thsse who practiced the rules laid down by the Lord The saints had embraced the gospel under difficulties and trials but God had fulfilled the promises made to his people in all ages He had given them the spirit of the Holy Ghost which gave them a knowledge of God and of the truth of the gospel Having obtained that knowledge there was no use trying to convert them to any other faith This was Gods work He had L set it up for the last time and it was being preached to the world as a witness President Budge advised those who were not members of the church to read its books and inquire into the principles of the gospel to the truth of which he bore his testimony ELDER MILO ANDRUS followed with a brief discourse after which the choir sang an anthem and Elder Elias Morris pronounced the benediction I |
