"Mike was like a shining shin-ing light to everyone, such a kind- hearted man, a total gentleman, so professional and always optimistic," said Cook. "Mike was larger than life in everything he did. He'd give you the shirt off his back if he figured you needed it. Mike was always there to give a helping hand," said Cedar Fort Fire Chief and White Hills neighbor, Don Miller. Penovich was a volunteer firefighter with the Cedar Fort Fire Department for four years before being elected to the position of chief. He served as Cedar Fort fire chief for nearly seven years. Professionally, he worked with the Saratoga Springs Public Works Dept. Penovich was also a leader in the local fire community. The Saratoga Springs Fire Department De-partment built close ties with other fire service departments in the local area, including Lehi, Eagle Mountain, Cedar Fort and the Utah County Fire Marshal. "Mike has taken a lot of barriers bar-riers away," said Rick Scott, Saratoga Springs Deputy in Charge. His considerable time and effort on the Cedar Fort Fire Department was all in his "free" time. "It was incredible the hours he put in as a volunteer," said current Cedar Fort Fire Chief Don Miller. As chief, Penovich searched for any money he could find to help the under-equipped all-volunteer department. He put in countless hours writing grants for updated fire protection pro-tection gear, equipment, and communication devices. He also worked tirelessly training volunteers and encouraging his team to attend advanced certification training. Fire department remains strong Lance Madigan NORTH COUNTY STAFF After the tragic loss of Saratoga Springs Fire Chief Mike Penovich last week, some residents may be concerned con-cerned about compromised service in case of emergency, but city officials are confident in the departments organization. organiza-tion. "We don't expect any changes in our emergency services," said Ken Leetham, Saratoga Springs city manager. man-ager. "We are going to need to replace Mike as Fire Chief, of course, but there is a good structure in the fire department. depart-ment. We have no reason to think that will really change things." Deputy in Charge Rick Scott agreed when reporting to the Saratoga Springs City Council Tuesday evening. "Of course we still have to continue with business," said Scott. "I want to you know that when someone calls 9-1-1, nothing will have changed." Leetham did say they were turning to neighboring agencies for assistance this week while they coordinated and regrouped. "These are all part of mutual aid agreements. agree-ments. This week we are just involved in arrangements to be made." Scott said that the surrounding sur-rounding areas would provide all fire and EMS services on Thursday and Friday, but that by 9 p.m. on Friday it would be "business as usual." As for the transition, Scott explained that he had been working closely with "Mike" he refused to call his fallen chief by any other name for several months. They had even laid contingency contin-gency plans for a tragedy like losing their chief. "We are copying exactly what is coming out of the fire chief's handbook," Scott said. "I have been working very closely with Mike the last six months to make the department depart-ment stronger. "There are a lot of things Mike and I were working on, and I want to put them into place. Mike did a lot, even on his way out." City and fire officials also took the time to express gratitude for the help from surrounding areas. Cities, fire departments, police and others oth-ers have all volunteered assistance as-sistance from across the state and even out of state. "Rick has done a great job helping to direct the team," said Mayor Timothy Parker. "There has also been tremendous tremen-dous input and support from volunteers from across the state." It is important for the Saratoga Sara-toga Springs fire personnel to understand how appreciated they are, he said. "Mike is the focus right now, but they are a strong team," Parker said. Services for Penovich are Thursday and Friday. A viewing view-ing is planned for Thursday evening from 6-8 and Friday morning from 9-11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 587 S. Saratoga Drive in Saratoga Springs. During the entire time, there will be fellow fire officers offi-cers will be on duty. "He will always be with somebody while he is laying at rest," said Scott. Friday morning, family fam-ily pallbearers will take Penovich's casket out to fire personnel, who will place it on Saratoga Springs Fire Engine 262. - ii , mi I X.
