Owlz back down on baseball stadium name controversy DAILY HERALD One of the local owners of the Orem Owlz baseball team apologized to the Daily Herald Her-ald on Monday as the team backed away from its earlier threat that news media must either refer to the stadium in which it plays as "Home of the Owlz" or lose all access to the team. In a voice mail, Jason Taylor, Tay-lor, a local part-owner of the team, called the Herald "first of all to apologize, and to see what we can do" to get news coverage restored after a "bad situation." Taylor was out of town and unavailable for an interview. The stadium is located at Utah Valley State College. Two weeks ago, an attempt by primary owner Jeff Katofsky Ka-tofsky and general manager Zachary Fraser to dictate the content of news articles led the Daily Herald and Deseret Morning News to curtail coverage cov-erage of the Pioneer League team and turn in press credentials. creden-tials. The Owlz are a tenant at the UVSC facility. The Herald received an e-mail e-mail from Fraser on Monday stating that from now on the Owlz "will not stop the media from using whatever name they would like" for the stadium sta-dium although he continued to insist that Home of the Owlz is the "official professional profes-sional name." "We have communicated to Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball that we were in no way a part of the college's marketing deal, we do not wish or want to be a part of that marketing deal, and we have been informed that even if the media chooses to reference the stadium by an incorrect name, that they (MiLB offices) understand we are not part of the deal and are not using the name and therefore will not be in viola season, how can anglers improve im-prove their odds of consistently consistent-ly catching fish? Three major things happen to fish during the summertime. First, they spread out and search for food. This could take them deep or shallow, depending depend-ing on the time of day, the forage for-age base and the weather. Sec- 10 WINDOWS INSTALLED , $2985! "Thanks, and have a great day." The Daily Herald has not sent a reporter or photographer photogra-pher to an Owlz game since the naming rights issue came to a head two weeks ago. But in light of the team's new position, the newspaper will resume coverage, said Randy Wright, executive editor. "Dragging the news media into a dispute about the stadium's stadi-um's name was silly," Wright said. "We had no dog in the fight. We simply won't be told how to write our stories. We don't have a quid pro quo arrangement ar-rangement with our sources." "When we looked into the matter, we found that the proper name for the stadium is Brent Brown Ballpark just like Energy Solutions Arena. Even Minor League Baseball officials in Florida said this was a non-issue," Wright said. "I'm glad the Owlz have seen the light." Documents show that UVSC properly exercised its right to acquire a name sponsor and to assign a name to the stadium. ond, they tend to gravitate towards to-wards the thermocline, a layer of water that is a few degrees cooler than surface water. Center St. Provo 373-6827 Neil K.Warner DAILY HERALD Orem shortstop Andrew Ro-mine Ro-mine is known for his spectacu-lar spectacu-lar fielding, making tough hops look routine, putting blinders on those seeing-eyed singles. He is known for being the son of a former Major League player (Kevin Romine) and his love for the glove. One thing he's not know for is the long ball. Romine went the entire college col-lege season at Arizona State without a home run and hadn't had one in his first six games with the Orem Owlz. But when he stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth inning on Monday night's game against Casper, Romine launched a deep fly ball to left. It could be ... way back ... it might be .. it is. A grand slam. Romine went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs to help Orem punish Casper 13-2 in front of 3,426 fans. "I was really just looking for something up and put it in play and get some runs in. It just happened to be up a little bit more than I expected it to be and I went with it," Romine said. "When I hit it, I know I got it well. I wasn't sure if it was going to stay fair." Orem manager Tom Kotch-man Kotch-man isn't ready to move Romine into the cleanup spot, but he does believe he will be productive at the plate. "With our hitting the way it has been and our defense in the infield, with Romine at short, oh my goodness, that's pretty nice," Kotchman said. "He had a big day at the plate, but that's not his tool, his tool is his defense. I told him whoever Andrew Romine is, be him and just go play. He's going to figure fig-ure out the bat. I think a lot of scouts sold him short." Romine has only played in seven of Orem's 21 games. He was late joining the team due to Arizona State's participation in the College World Series, but since his arrival, he's fit like a glove. A fan gave Romine his home run ball and after the game, Romine repaid the fan for his thoughtfulness by tracking side. This reaction might be the single most significant clue as to how the successful anglers are finding their fish. When water levels begin to drop, the fish sense the change and begin to move away from the shallow backs of coves. "That's definitely one (ball) that's going on the shelf," Romine Ro-mine said. "I'm sure my dad was listening (on the Internet). I'm sure I'll get a phone call from them. They call me after every game, or the next morning, morn-ing, and talk about it." Romine had plenty of help some from his teammates (Orem had 15 hits) and some from the Rockies, who showed why they have a 4-17 record. Casper committed six errors. Gordie Gronkowski got Orem rolling early. The 6-foot-6, 246-pound RBI factory drove in a run in the third inning to give him a Pioneer League-best 26 RBI. Orem scored five more ruas in the fourth when Angel De Los Santos started and ended the inning. in-ning. Stint os singled to start the rally. Jay Brossman doubled in a run, Hector Estrella singled in a run and a pair of Rockie errors helped Orem bat around. All of the run support helped put Orem starter Esmerlin Jimenez at ease. Jimenez went six innings and gave up just four hits to pick up the win. The win improved Orem's record to 12-9. The Owlz will be off today before starting a seven- game road trip that begins be-gins at Billings. "I'm glad we're getting it out of the way now," Kotchman said. "It's better to take this road trip now than in August, because that one's a stinker in August. Minds start wondering wonder-ing in August." I Owlz 7, Rockies 3: At Orem, The Owlz finally got on top in game and did not have to come back as they decked the Casper Rockies on Sunday afternoon. For only the third time this season sea-son the Owlz led from coast-to-coast during a ballgame. Orem scored three in the third as catcher Chris Rosenbaum smacked his first homer with the Owlz, a shot over the left field fence onto the berm. Jerry Gonzalez belted his first dinger, a solo job with two outs in the fourth to make it 4-1 Owlz. Jay Brossman, who was 4-for4, 4-for4, drove in his second run with his sixth double of the season sea-son in the fifth. It was another come from le-hind le-hind win as Orem was down 0-1 after two and a half innings. New left handed starter Chris Armstrong was roughed up for five runs in the second as the bottom third of the order strung together three hits for a pair of runs. The lead off man Chad Lembeck then crushed a three run homer over the batters bat-ters eye in dead center field. I Raptors 10, Owlz 6: At Orem, the Ogden Raptors ripped the Owlz 10-6 Friday night to hand Orem its second straight series loss. The Raptors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first and held on the rest of the way despite being out hit 14-to-12. Starter Jordan Walden allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits while walking two and allowing allow-ing a solo shot to Jaime Ortiz. Jordon Towns suffered the loss as he was one of six Owlz hurl-erson hurl-erson the night. t Owlz 7, Raptors 6: At Orem, the Owlz beat the Raptors for the fifth time in eight games this season with a 7-0 come from behind victory at The Diamond at Green Acres last Thursday night. Orem scored the first run on an RBI single by Pioneer League Player of the Week Gordie Gronkowski in the bottom bot-tom of the first. The Raptors tallied five runs on six straight hits with two outs in the second sec-ond off starter Vladimir Veras to take a 5-1 lead. But as has leen the case five times Ixifore this season, the Owlz overcame a three run or larger deficit to win. The big inning on Thursday night was the third as they plated five runs highlighted by another RBI single by Gronkowski and a screaming line drive three run homer by catcher Anel De I)S Santos down the left field line. fish and they should bite.
