Show 7B The SunNews Wednesday July 21 1993 Sanpete settlement lives on This James Allred was sent by Brigham Young to take 15 families and settle in the Sanpete area The settlement was called Allred’s Settlement A small fort was built around a spring which had long been used by Indians and early scouts as a campsite The tiny fort was not considered substantial in the enough during hostilities Walker War in settlers retreated to Manti and MountPlcas-an- t and left the Indians to bum the fort and other buildings Five years after the war the same location was settled again New homes were established and farms carved from the wilderness by a new pioneer company mostly Danish emigrants again under Allred They named their home Springtown for the nearby water supply and it was James new also known as Little Denmark Several sawmills were built in town and in the canyon mouth in 1860 But by 1866 the large community was again deserted as residents moved into other communities to escape the Blackhawk War hostilities Resettled again in 1867 the town soon had canals dug and school and church buildings All early buildings were or sod then as finances improved quite substantial homes were built Most residents were farmers cattle and sheepmen and some lumSeveral freighters bermen who hauled supplies to various mining erected of log towns such as Piochc NV Frisco and Silver Reef also lived in the town now named Spring City LDS Church Apostle Orson Hyde was in charge of the Sanpete Sevier and had a home in Piute communities town and was also the valley InLDS Protestant and dian agent Methodist churches were established Many town structures were made from the oolithic limestone found in nearby quarries In 1890 The Rio Grande Western Railroad passed through the area and the city became an important shipping point for grain livestock wool lumber cream cheese and building stone The current town of Spring City can be considered as living town as it lost 23 of its peak population of 1250 in 1895 The Utah Heritage Foundation working with the Historic American Buildings Survey found the entire town to be about the only place in Utah which retained most of the early pioneer flavor largely unaffected by progress or industrialization Many of the original even on Main buildings remain street to illustrate the typical early Utah pioneer town Some of the historic buildings now on the Utah Historic Register include the LDS chapel built in 1902 thecity hall built in 893 the Beck home built in 1883 of limestone Peter Monson’s home built in 1883 and Orson Hyde’s residence built in 1857 N hi f D i KKW2KSVC 450 West 400 South Richfield -
