She only paints during October and her easel is round, orange and filled with sand to keep it from falling over. The doll body supports a differnet character each year. One Halloween it turned into Dracula complete with a black cape. edible. "Commonly known as pumpkins, Mrs. Albertss easels provide the perfect background for a multitude of monsters, witches, gremlins and other fantasy figures. first started doing this three years ago when I was trying to find a way to save the pumpkin so I could can it. The first thing vye tried was gluing on construction paper features, but it didnt look that effective, said Mrs. AlI berts. One day I was painting figures on my daughters wall and thought to myself If this goes well why not try doing it on a pumpkin?-- "' ' - " Mrs. Alberts first efforts were personalized pumpkins for her three chidlren, Teri, Shannon and B.J. Now a family tradition, they all look forward to their own pumpkin each Halloween. This year the emphasis is on gremlins with stripe as the star. Glaring through the Albertss front window, stripes round, orange head sits atop a doll body The number of pumpkins she paints depends on how many her garden produces and the amount donated by friends. She enjoys giving away her creations, often adorned with a picture that carries a special message. Last year one of my friends got the grossest witch you even saw because she gives me such a hard time, laughed Mrs. Alberts. The pumpkin painting process is simple, especially if one has artistic talents. All I do is wash the pumpkin, pick the best side and outline and face with a water soluble black felt tip pen. Then I paint it with cheap acrylic paints, said Mrs. Alberts. A perfectly shaped pumpkin isnt necessary. Small bumps can efturn into warts or other fects. Mrs. Alberts tries to adapt the picture she is using to the pumpkins shape. A narrow, more rectangular speciment lends itself to a Frankenstein face while a small, round pumpkin is perfect 3-- D for Gizmo. When Halloween is over, Mrs. Alberts' scrapes off the painting, cuts the fruit into quarters and cooks it. She then purees the pumpkin using a speical machine that discards the rind and seeds. After canning the puree, Mrs. Alberts is ready to turn her former artistic triumph into a variety of taste treats like pies, cookies and breads. One of her favorites is an interesting variation of pumpkin bread.
