Show The Race. The sporting men turned out in fbrce on Thursday to witness the half mile dash at Faust's track, between Kitchen's "Walking John" and Travis and Stewart's " Mark Moore"; and besides the many visitors at the course from this city, there were several sev-eral gentlemen present from Ogden and other towns in the vicinity. The straight track was in fine condition and the flyers never looked in hotter fix. Notwithstanding '' John" was to carry forty-four pounds more weight than "Moore," he was the favorite in betting circles, and sold as high as two to one above his antagonist in pools. Shortly before 3 o'clock the horses were sent off on a good start, and for the first GOO yards they fairly Hew over the ground, ''John" leading. lead-ing. Then the extra weight began to mako itself felt on "John"; he slackened slack-ened his speed, while "Moore," warming up to his work, led out, gaining steadily, and coming in 12 feet ahead, making the half mile in about fifty-one seconds. Although "John" was beaten, he lost none of his numerous friends, and he still remains re-mains the favorite runner with Utah horsemen. Some are willing to wager that ho could, in a second trial, win a similar dash with tho same oddg against him. |
