Show THAT CANE SPRINGS DUGWAY all motorists traveling from moab to points south are familar with the dangerous piece of road between moab and monticello and the following editorial published last week in the ti times mes in independent dependent will be appreciated by out our readers as well mr taylor has written a fine article which we hope may bear fruit the chairman of the state road commission of utah speaking before the associated civic clubs of Sou utah at moab on dec 29 1945 made the declaration very emphatically lLy that the cane springs dugway a one milt mil stretch of canyon road 15 miles south of moab on highway was one of the most hazardous pieces of road in the state of utah and unquestionably should and would have hav no I 1 rating in future road construction in southeastern southeast err utah we have received information that the cane springs spring project will not be reached on the state road program before the 1949 fiscal year ahil which ch commences july I 1 of next year yeah this means that travelers on highway will haac to wait about two years before that abominable dugway at cane springs is eliminated the times independent has been informed nume numerous rouF times from authoritative sources that all engineering or the cane springs project has been completed for five years the editor of the times independent personally heard the chairman of the state road commission declare that highway was one of most mosi important gateway roads and that the cane springs du dugway t way was the worst link on that road the qu question i estion is why all the delay we observed today a considerable number of buses busel passing through moab headed south upon inquiry we V found that no less than 32 charter buses had passed through throng i moab today nov 20 loaded with mexican nationals who were being returned to their homes in old mexico af afeei tel working under contract in idaho and other northwestern farm sections during the harvest season they were being transported back to their homes in the southland by rio grande lewis brothers santa fe and greyhound buses why lahy were they routed over highway the answer is obvious to anyone who will look at the fhe map highway affords the shortest distance between two points the northwest and the south and the southeast this highway long neglected is in no condition to stand up under the strain of the constantly increasing heavy traffic it is receiving due to its favored geographical location it must have more recognition from state and federal road authorities almost everyone realizes that political influence carries a lot of weight in the allocation of road funds we are cognizant of the fact that southeastern utah rate a lot of political influence i e votes but we would like to have some politician explain away the cane springs dugway |
