Show john L oliver answers summons with the passing of john L ll 11 l frer at moab utah november berl I 1 swa 1947 bluff lost its oldest most outstanding and much respected citizen death was due to infirm aties incident to old age funeral services were held at moab nov 22 interment was in the moab cemetery by the side of his first c wife saber ellen wilcox who died in may 1913 john L oliver was born at san utah april 4 1862 son of william T oliver and nancy lovern oliver he was the third child in a family of 13 children at the age of four months he suffered a leg injury that crippled him for life As a child he learned to walk on his hands as well as his feet by this method he was able to follow and compete with his companions in their work and play As he advanced in years his lameness increased making it for him to walk with 66 pitches itches ris his occupations were many and varied his father was a stockman and john became a good horseman and followed the cattle range in 1882 he freighted for the santa fe railroad hauling supplies from albuquerque to lawson springs arizona in 1883 he married saber ellen wilcox seven children were born to this union about 1904 he established an indian trading post Pos near gallup N AL now known as I 1 newcombe New combs trading post because aa t of his cifes ill health he be moved his family to moab where she tr passe daway his love for the in r deans compelled him again to establish ta Ita blish a trading post at mexican hat the navajos cavajos among whom he worked learned to love and respect him often those he knew in his younger days called at his home to talk over old times after his death an old friend called to see him oil oh learning that he had passed on the navajo man wept like a child he with his parents were among the first settlers in fairview an and d moab utah jewett N al show low and eden arizona and he helped with the erection of the first church houses in these places he made his own shingles and had the first shingled roof in fowlow how low he held numerous posits acl ans in the church and was al at alj j ays very active in civic and social affairs in 1923 he married sarah dalton oliver and resided here until liis bis death the poem appearing on another page was written by one of his granddaughters grand rand daughters and exa presses the admiration and respect in which he was held by his family and friends |
