districts and that the was now made easier and was being done better there aias has been quite an improvement in the attendance at elders quorum meetings although in his opinion there Is still room tor for material improvement the auxillia ry organizations were going on nicely notwithstanding the severe storms and the unusual pests last year the tithing paid exceeded the previous year by the number of ti 11 the payers Is 2616 and the non tithe payers all of these non tithe payers but GG 66 hold some office in the priesthood in this connection he ur ged the saints to pay their tithing as they go along as it will be an easier matter in that way As to fast offerings there Is room for a great deal ot of improvement some wards had paid but I 1 cents per capita while the best that had been paid was 48 cents per capita ile he thought the saints should pay fast offerings whether there were were any poor in the ward or not there are arc plenty of poor in other wards who are not able to pro continued on page three quarterly Gon conference ferem continued from first page perly care tor for them money aloney thus collected in wards whore where there are no poor could be sent to the pres tribute to the good work done by his predecessors in the bishopric notwithstanding the calamity that befell the ward in the way of the severe hailstorm early in the year the net tithing receipts came very nearly up to last year that Is 1904 the amount was about 7 per capita there had been a material increase in the payment of fast offerings the rate being about 48 cents per capita the poor had been assisted to quite an extent without having to call tor for aid from the tithing fund the bishopric holds weekly meetings and are united in their work the lesser priesthood is organized and hold meetings every saturday evening there are two quorums of deacons one of teachers and part of a quorum of priests the deacons are are doing a good work the teachers not quite as well and the priests are hardest of all to get to do their duty when asked by apostle smith to give a report of the efficiency of the present ward authorities the bishop simply said that they were doing their very best to roll on the work bishop stohl reported seven missionaries sion slon aries in the field and four more 1 ad just received ci calls 7 0 k ak bishop J B D Alc mcmaster Alaster reported the let ward of holding meetings the ward relief society came in for a good word the bishop saying that they were a great help to him in the matter of tithing the ward had clone better than in the previous year fast offerings had bad ben as good as usual but not good enough there ire are lome who do not pay either ing or fast offerings been urged to do so elder orin P miller counselor to the presiding bishop of 0 the church said that he felt in one respect like moses alases ol of old had described himself slow of 0 speech lie ile felt however that with the help ef ct the holy spirit lie he might le be able to say something printable to all lie felt that the most able were powerless to minister in the gospel of christ without this spirit lie he called attention to the tact fact that fast day was formerly observed on thursdays but lately the day had been changed on account of so many having to work liard hard on a week day and needed food lie he explained that a fast in its proper meaning was to abstain from food and drink from supper on saturday evening until supper on sunday even evening ing fast offerings are for the aiding of the poor who we have always with us and he thought that twenty five cents from the head of each family vas was not any too much to contribute really one should pay what he might consume in that length of time it if he had not tasted fasted we should do all these things in the spirit and meaning of the gospel it if we hoped to be blessed all blessings are predicated upon the observance of some law singing 0 say what Is truth benediction by elder lorenzo jeppson SATURDAY AFTERNOON singing come dearest lord prayer by elder barnard white singing to thee 0 god we do approach pres W C horsley mentioned the fact that there are a great many members of the church residing in our wards without recommends and he u urged r ge d t them lie m t to 0 procure p r oc ure th them lemand and to 11 loin join the wards where they live lie he asked the parents to encourage their boys to attend their lesser priesthood meetings and to teach them the imbor tance of the calling when they are ordained deacons they are enthusiastic but their interest seemed to wane thereafter unless they were made to fully realize the responsibility they assume thought we should encourage our young mento prepare for missions not only in the know knowledge knowledg led ge of the gospel but in a financial way get them to lay aside a little money from their early boyhood tor for that purpose then there would not be so many who cannot go when they are called for lack of means in his own family he purposed to establish what he should call a missionary fund referred also in denunciatory terms of the deplorable habit formed by some seme of our young they go away and work all summer and in the tall fall come home with money enough for all ordinary purposes but they spend it frivolously before christ mas time and tor for the remainder of ol 01 the year lay around and live off the th old folks elder gustav korth who recently returned from a mission to germany was called upon to report his bis work he had enjoyed his mission very much and returned home with a desire to continue in the work elder win lowe reported the quorum of sei seventy enty the quorum includes the wards of willard Wll lard perry and mantua and being thus scattered it is a hard matter to get them to attend their meetings regularly in the willard ward they hold weekly class betings ee tings singing all hail the glorious day elder seymour D B young remarked that when elder korth was giving his report he be was reminded of the prophecy that of all nations the lord hath made one blood he has gathered his people from all parts of the earth and made of them one people he was also reminded of the time when moses appeared to the prophet joseph smith and delivered to him the keys of the gathering of israel the spirit of gathering reaches the hearts of the people and we ae blest notwithstanding the efforts of our enemies to destroy us he related his experiences in going to the dedication of the joseph smith monument in vermont ile he had expected that there would be some prejudice displayed but was happily surprised to find that instead of a feeling of bitterness the people there seemed to be greatly pleased with what was being done he gave an inter esting description of hi his visit to the hill cumorah the sacred grove the place where the latter day prophet offered up his memorable prayer and the kirtland temple in referring to the persecutions of the saints he said let us possess our souls in patience and do our best to maintain our faith singing an angel from on elih high apostle hyrum al smith said that it was necessary that both speaker and listeners be in possession of the spirit of god tor for a testimony borne by one who knows the truth should not be borne in n vain he regretted that t s some owe f ew s beut gearu alie chur ch without realizing what was its value to them in speaking ot of the reports that had been made by the bishops said he hoped that those who had been reported as paying as much as 48 cents per capita were not going to flatter themselves that they had done enough while that amount was the highest reported it was not good enough and showed a lack of interest in the poor those who bear the yoke of christ in sincerity find the yoke easy and the burden light in the matter of fast offerings he thought that even as much as a dollar each month was not too much tor for the head of a family to pay if we would pay our tithing month after month or as we receive our income we should never miss the money and atwould it would be no burden to us becan we can not escape hearing bearing some yoke in this life and if we do not bear the yoke of christ we will have to bear the yoke of the adversary singing praise ye the father benediction by elder A E jensen MORNING superintendent john D peters presided singing sabbath schools with their children they should at least show an interest in the lessons by having the children recite them at home he thought many lessons could be drawn from the mornings ex excises and named them in the order that they had been given he said the faith of a little child Is well nigh perfect related an instance of a little boy who administered to his father and the father was healed also a case of a little girl in chicago who had been miraculously 0 asly healed through the administration of the elders because she had faith elder seymour B D young related an instance of healing as his office was temporal rather than spiritual he would deal with temporal subjects he described what an honest tithing is it means simply one tenth of ones income that which Is a profit and used by ourselves or family in his opinion we should be willing and anxious to give the law a broad construction referred to the splendid organization and system of the church ile he said that a party ot of ministers who had been in convention on the pacific coast came to the presiding bishops office and inspected the records and how pleased they were with the maner in which they were kept he believed that it if we lived this law and also the law of fast offerings we should be prospered in a temporal as well as a spiritual way As to the use of tithing he explained that for one thins wards had bad rec received Elved aid in the building of meeting houses during the past gearhe said further that no use was made or of any of 0 the funds in any an way that was not perfectly legitimate elder seymour
