The fifth graders from Art City Elementary enjoyed a day of fun and learning at Shadow Mountain recently. They participated in team and trust building exercises, as well as getting a taste for what Shadow Mountain will be like this summer. Even a little rain couldn't dampen their excitement during this great activity. Hobble Creek book fair The entire SpringvilleMapleton community is invited to "Enter the Kingdom of Reading" at the Hobble Creek Elementary Scholastic Book Fair. Hear ye! hear ye! On October the 11th Art City had the Knights of the Reading Table assembly in conjunction with the book fair. There were kings and queens everywhere! As Mrs. Pearce presided as the Queen of Reading, Mr. Rowe, the King of the Kingdom of Reading and Mr. Taylor, the court jester, placed breastplates and crowns on the knights. Nick Bringhurst said, "It totally rocked" and on the other side he was a little embarrassed when his name got called upon the royal stage. Peyton Kerbo said " I had butterflies in my stomach", as she waited to be knighted by Mr Rowe. Last but not least Brittany Melgo-za Melgo-za said "she had to read a lot of books in order to be called up". Each of the knights were given a holding in the Kingdom of Reading at Art City Elementary of a book of their choice from the book fair. That is the royal end! Utah Valley Transportation and Community Planning Open House October 19 Springville resident Andrew Pickering, age 13, won first prize in the children's division in a scarecrow contest held recently by Sun River Gardens in Orem. He won $100 for his entry, "The Kalua Pig." The annual Utah Valley Transportation and Community Commu-nity Planning Open House will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Orem Senior Friendship Center, 93 N. 400 East, Orem. Each year, suicide claims nearly as many lives as motor vehicle crashes. The Utah County Health Department (UCHD) is working to prevent a killer from which we loose so many. "More Utah teens and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and chronic lung disease combined," said Carolina Harward, Utah County Health Department Child, Health, Evaluation and Care coordinator. "It is a very misunder- Brookside students warmly welcomed Miss Utah, Julia Bachison, to their school on Friday, Oct. 14. Miss Utah came to speak to the students stu-dents about health and fitness. "Suicide is not about wanting to die, but about a powerful need to end pain. Individuals that choose suicide sui-cide feel that they are unable un-able to cope with feelings of pain, hopelessness, isolation isola-tion or other uncertainties." "The more you know about suicide, the better you will be able to help someone struggling with these issues," said Harward. Har-ward. "You can learn more about the warning signs of suicide, also you can help promote suicide awareness and prevention." Many of the warning signs are verbal. "Common remarks including such things as T can't go on,' 'nothing matters any more,' or even 'I'm thinking of ending it all,'" said Harward. Har-ward. "If you have a family member or friend that makes these sort of comments, com-ments, they must be takep seriously. Studies show that best way to prevent suicide is through early recognition and treatment." Harward explains that people who want to die almost al-most always suffer from isolation and , loneliness. "You can help by reaching out, listening, and letting them know you care," said Harward. "Don't contradict or be little their problems, but reaffirm the individuals worth and importance." "There are many resources re-sources for people to turn to," continues Harward. "School counselors or teachers, church leaders, and medical professionals are just a 'few. In Utah County, Wasatch Mental Health provides professional profession-al services for those in need, including a 24 hour crisis line at 373-7393. Feelings Feel-ings of depression or a desire de-sire to end ones life are not uncommon. But with education edu-cation and vigilance, we can prevent real tragedies from happening."
