Ute swimmers compete at state level The culmination of a season of long practices and evening travel home with damp hair came to an end this weekend for the Uintah High School swim team. Their season ended following the state swim meet held last Saturday at BYU. According to swim Coach Laurie Stott, six girls and eight boys qualified to represent Uintah at the meet. "Considering the number of swimmers who participated in the tournament, the Utes did a spectacular spectac-ular job," Stott said. The Lady Ute swimmers placed 16th in a field of 21 schools and the boys tied with Bear River for 10th place. A total of 22 teams competed in the boys events. Judge Memorial, another Region 10 opponent for Uintah, won the tournament in both the boy's and girl's classes. Park City placed second in the girl's and fourth in the boy's competition. The boy's relay team of Sean Kendall, Spencer Perry, Eric Caldwell and Shane Bascom earned sixth place in two events. They placed in the 200 yard free relay with a time of 1:35.29. Rowland HallSt. Mark's won the event in 1:32.97. Their next event was the 400 yard free relay. Uintah's time was 3:36.50. Judge Memorial won this race in 3:20.79. Freshman Courtney Stone and Junior Eric Caldwell put in strong individual performances in the women's 100 yard back and men's 100 yard fly, respectively. Stone completed her race in 1:08.86 to garner eighth place. Lady Utes lose on road, win at home Uintah's Maggie Battel scored 14 points to lead all scoring in each of the Lady Ute games last week. The effort was not enough to keep Park City at bay last week as the Lady Utes fell 37 - 29 on the road. However, Uintah did defeat Granite 50 -27 in Vernal on Friday. The Lady Utes were 4 - 4 in conference games and 8 - 9 for the season following fol-lowing the Granite game. They play their last two Region 10 league games this week. In Park City, the Lady Miners overpowered the Lady Utes in the first period. Uintah trailed 16 - 7 at the close of the first quarter then kept the game even for the remaining remain-ing three quarters. They were never able to recover from the slow start. Stone also stroked her way to 16th place in the women's 200 yard free event finishing finish-ing in 2:14.86. Caldwell also competed com-peted in the 100 yard back stroke event and earned 13th place with a points. Jamie Justice added three while Karissa White and Laticia Herkshan rounded out Uintahis offense with two points each. Battel hit the only Uintah three point goal. Park City was led offensively by Judkins who dropped in 12 points. Berry, Jolley and Harris added six each for the Lady Miners and Tomlin scored five and Mackaben two. Tomlin hit once from the three point line while Harris dropped in two. At home, the Lady Utes dominated dominat-ed the Lady Farmers of Granite in every point in the game. Uintah scored in double figures in each quarter while Granite scored only three points in the first then added eight more points in each of the remaining three quarters. Smith 5, Slade 3 and Phillips added 1. Hurst hit the only Granite long ball. The Lady Utes are in fourth place in Region 10. Wasatch leads with an undefeated 8 - 0 record followed by Judge Memorial and Park City. Granite and Union round out the bottom of the region standings in fifth and sixth place, respectively. She was an assistant coach for two years and assumed the head coaching position this season. Stott and her swimmers practiced at the pool every afternoon after-noon for at least two hours. The swimmers also lifted weights at 5:30 a.m. on a weekly schedule. The Uintah swim team included 31 swimmers. "I thoroughly enjoyed working with these exceptional athletes who have so much to offer and have dedicated so much time to the sport," Stott said. See Fishing on B10 Shooting club to organize The Vernal 4-H shooting club will be organizing Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Vernal City offices. Members of the club will participate partici-pate in state and national events in shotgun, archery, muzleloader, 22 rifle and knowledge events. Participants much hold a Hunter's Safety Blue Card. The club can furnish fur-nish equipment for participants. Knowledge events consist of a written test, hunter identification, safety trail and orienteering. The club is open to juniors and senior ages 12-17. The state competition com-petition is April 16 and 17 and the National in Pennsylvania is in July. At state level competition, participants partici-pants compete as individuals. The top 5 in junior and seniors divisions divi-sions go to nationals.
