For everything that went well in Park City, the Utes found as much wrong when they returned home. Personal fouls and turnovers plagued Uintah in the first half. Granite was effective offensively and took advantage of the opportunities opportu-nities that the Utes handed them. At the end of the first, Uintah trailed 22 - 15. The second quarter was just as bleak. The Famiers enjoyed a 29 - 17 lead mid way through the second quarter and maintained the advantage to enter half time leading 41 - 28. There were 24 local wrestlers who placed in the junior high division divi-sion and another three who placed in the middle school class. "I thought the tournament was great for our kids," Workman said. "We have a young team and had only four wrestlers return from placing in last year's tournament. To have so many place this year was great," he added. Three local wrestlers achieved state championships. Creedon Merkley won at 93 pounds, Zach Reynolds at 100 pounds and Kaydon Abplanalp took the 116 pound division championship. Workman noted that Creedon performed per-formed an extraordinary act when he was being awarded his championship champi-onship medal. Kenny Young was presenting the medals to those who placed. Creedon, a seventh grader, hung his champion medal around Kenny's neck and insisted he accept it in behalf of his late son Conner. Conner was a member of the wrestling team when he lost his life in an accident last fall. "The highlight of the tournament for me was when Creedon gave Kenny his medal for Conner," Workman said. "Everyone who knew the background story was moved by Creedon' s act." Others who earned positions in the state competition follow. Workman received great praise from Uintah High School wrestling Coach Gregg Stensgard for his efforts at the junior high level. "Jason has been short-handed for help and yet did an excellent job with the program," Stensgard said. Workman said he received help from the fathers of several of his team members. Fathers Scott Merkley, Lee Schultz, Darrin Bailey and Matt Sunkees were recognized rec-ognized by Workman for the time they spent helping at practices. But in the end, he gave credit to the wrestlers. "The kids stepped up and did a great job this year," Workman said. Although the regular school sponsored spon-sored wrestling season is now over, Workman is encouraging his wrestlers to continue on in the free style and Greco wrestling opportunities opportu-nities that are still available.
