Show WHAT "UTAH DAY" MEANS TO HUNTINGTON LASS Utah Day means to me that on this day.the 25th of April, I am led to think of Utah, in what way I may help to make it more beautiful, to make it more of a home, and how I can help others that .hey may do likewise. It means that I am not only to think but do. Iam expected to t;ilk with others and make up conversation of how we may better our state, we may make it our schools better, and how we may make ourselves better. It means that we are expected to better ourselves in every way possible to help out our state. In our mining camps, we can, if we will, stop the Greeks andJaps from their work, and give our own men and boys a chance for work, giving them the money instead of others. If Utah paid her money to her own people instead of others, who send it to Greece, Japan and other places, we might be rich now. If we paid our own men instead of others, we might" spend our money in building manufacturing establishments, and manufacture our own products instead in-stead of sending the materials to the eastern states to be manufactured, If we manufactured our own products see what we could do. W would scarce need the help of our eastern sisters. We raise sufficient of our own corn, potatoes, fruit, honev, alfalfa seed, hay grain and nearly all our flour if we did not export part of it. If we had our own manufacturing mills, we could manufacture manu-facture our own machinery from the native iron, stamp our own money, make our own lard and furniture, and convert our own hogs, cattle, and sheep into meat. But you see, we do not have these privileges yet.though we hope to have them some time. The quicker quick-er we get them the better. So let us try to do our best to help now; let ue be united and help one another. Utah day m?ans to me that most of our public spirited men are trying to talk up things in which we may better our State. They are trying their best to put in water and electriclight systems and their efforts will soon be rewarded. The railroad is, ere long, coming into our county and thus Utah has good prospects of growing much faster than it did many years ago. It means that the people have worked and kept on working till now they are bringing Utah to the front, and she will soon lead out. She ranks fourth now in having good schools. She has some of the best singerj and artists, and some of the most intelligent of men men who are not afraid of work. Abou.. the next thi liji we need are som a manufacturing establishments after we get our lights and waterworks. We have plenty of mountain water to run the mills and to keep our farms also. If we can keep our State growing, (which it is possible to do) like it has in the sixty-t-vo years since the pio-ners pio-ners came, we will lead, in manufacturing manufactur-ing and manufacture our own products ' and not give the profit to the eastern states for doing this work for us. Utah day msans.in full, the brightening up of the brightest star in the union. Flora You ig, Fifth Grade. tHuntington, Utah |
