Show investigating N proposition committee reports report erecting Erect inc of cannery pos possible ible and recommends it at a recent stake business meeting the building of a candig factory I 1 in n sevier county was discussed to end a committee of two from each ward with a chairman was appointed to investigate the feasibility of the erection of such a factory this committee was comprised of the following ward re representatives presenta tires koosharem Koo sharem andrew anderson and soren sorensen glenwood J H payne and henry peterson venice john stewart and varsall cowley richfield Richtie ld peter nielsen and J F ogden richfield Richtie ld ond d dr J I 1 curtis and geo holmstead hol in stead richfield 3rd ard dan peterson and J W parker the committee met discussed a plan of action and from their number a committee of five was selected to take a trip north to get more definite information first hand from already existing canneries as to the feasibility of erecting a cannery in our county this committee was composed of the following J F ogden chairman i H payne geo holmstead holmsten ad john S stewart tew and soren sorensen the plan was to investigate from two points of view first the farmers viewpoint whether he can grow peas on our soil and grow them profitably second from the point ot 01 view of the one who finances the proposition whether it is a profitable investment or not the first stop was at ephraim where farmers were interviewed ewed who were pleased to grow peas for which chev receive on the average about per acre some in 1922 received as much as per acre things at the beginning were not so rosy for the farmers nor factory owners but after several years of str struggling ug gling tine fine dividends are be being 1 ng paid and stock Is selling at 1 50 for par value factories were visited at spring ville provo and murray in the last three named sections farmers due to better conditions ore receiving on the average about per acre for peas where this crop lins has to compete with beets fruit tomatoes and other vegetables but still farmers are anxious to grow peas it was learned that no corn Is canned in the state some beans squash kraut pickles pork and beans celery hominy and chow chow are canned alio al 0 o much of the various fruits and tomatoes there are thirty seven canneries in the state some operative cooperative co some partly so and some not at all co opera tive As tar far as could be learned tile the most successful one is truly cooperative where farmers own most of if not all of the stock A one line pea cannery sufficient to take the product from about acres would cost exclusive of buildings about or 22 00 the building would not be expensive ought to be substantial of two stories 50 by GO feet and would house a two line plant but without warehouse possible cost coat 10 the effle committee went as far north a aa ogden and was gone four full days the members came home feeling that each one could recommend to both barmer and capitalist the erection of a cannery for sevier county A public meeting will be held in the near future in which a more complete report will be given |
