Show STATE FARM BUREAU REPORTS ON TIES FOR THE YEAR operation cooperation co reorganization taxa ion and marketing are outstanding features tile the utah state farm bureau through president ephraim bergeson and commercial agent fred mathews submitted to the local organizations gan izat ions a report of last years activities in which operation cooperation co reorganization taxation and marketing in are outstandingly dealt with regarding i gar ding the various endeavors the report states tile the agricultural operative cooperative co association act known as the atwood bill under which operative cooperative co associations ciati ons are being organized was passed almost without a dissenting vote in the legislature and was promptly signed by the governor in pursuance of this measure seventeen separate commodity organizations have already been perfected and others are in course of organization the first of these was the utah poultry producers inc this association began with members it now has a membership 0 of more than one thousand and it is gaining new members every day it is six months old and has distributed to producers a total sum of there has been shipped from the state this year eighty five carloads of eggs which have been distributed from the atlantic to the pacific the records show that last year there were only seventeen carloads shipped out of the state and loter in the season two carloads were shipped in we are now obtaining tile the highest price on the new york market and the producer is receiving the benefit of every dollar received outside of actual running e expenses the books of the association are audited regularly by a bonded firm of accountants and members are kept advised in detail of all its transactions it is interesting to note the fact that egg producers have received this year about 3 30 per cent more for their product than last year in spite of the fact that prices generally throughout the united states during 1523 19 2 3 have been considerably lower than they were during 1922 7 and this has been w without rat raising sl g the price to the consumer we are forced to admit that producers outside ot of the association have been bene fitted by its successes and it is surely time for every producer to get in and reap the full reward of cooper co oper aaion the experience with poultry products Is being repeated in the fruit and vegetable and dairy associations the dairying interests are being rapidly organized and a number of milk units are already receiving substantial advances tor for their product through operative cooperative co effort one association in particular has been able to increase their price of butter fat 65 per cent when a sufficient number of local units have been organized there will be created a state agency through which the total dairy products of the state may be handled in increasing quantities the work of organizing co opera tive five associations has been accomplished by first presenting the question to the producers in the several localities of the state then making a survey of the local conditi conditions such as variety of products quantity anticipated facilities for handling character of roads location of producing areas with respect to depots I 1 character of leadership in the community and all other questions which would have a bearing upon continued on oil work of preparing articles of incorporation bylaws by laws marketing contracts etc has been supplied through the state farm bureau at a very small cost to the operative cooperative co associations and uch fees as are paid for all of this organization work have all been deposited in a state farm bureau fund chich is used for the purpose of carrying on this work and not one dollar of such fees has been received by any individual for legal or any other service kami farm bureau antion in pursuance of the candland bill received the unanimous support of the legislators ani the governor a plan of organization tor for farm bureaus was devised devise 1 and was submitted to tile the national organization for analysis after due consideration the entire plan was approved by the american farm bureau federation and in order to afford a thorough study of this plan in actual operation a conference of representatives presenta tives of the western states was called by the national organization and was held in utah on august 2nd and and 3rd ard and davis county was selected as the first territory to be organized after the plan had received the consideration of the organization representatives from the surrounding states it was unanimously approved and has been adopted as the type of organization to be employed throughout the entire united states and goes forth under the name of the UTAH PLAN every member should feel a just pride in the fact that through the efforts of his own organization his state has received this recognition the state farm bureau has furnished legal services to local farm bureaus in various localities of the state and during the recent sessions of the prepared and presented a bill for the limitation of taxes and supplied every legislator with drafts in the form of blue prints and with other data to justify the enactment of the measures fostered by it several calls were made upon local farm bureaus to call upon their representatives and senators to support measures with gratifying and beneficial results the represent ave of the farm bureau appeared at all committee meetings where important measures favored by the farm bureau were being considered and or on two occasions presented carefully prepared arguments upon the constitutionality of certain proposed laws were being opposed by attorneys representing other inter the effort affected ests which were nere statute to pass a tax ta limitation finally resulted in a series of compromise measures which though not just what the farm bureau had long step in in sought constituted a the right direction and we are today noting the effect of these statutes when it Is discovered that more than fifty out of the taxing units in the state have exceeded the levies fixed by these laws and in pursuance of the statute the state board of 0 equalization is calling upon the county attorneys to institute suits for the correction of these illegal levies it is estimated that in one school district alone at least 75 will be saved to the tax pay ers without any interference with wi t 11 efficiency efti clency of the schools in this district A number of cities and towns have been required to reduce or ad ji st their levies aggregating large urns unis saved delft relations eions with other organizations tile the farmers problem touches directly ecal v and vitally the interests of every other business or enterprise and all d in order to understand ills his problems it is necessary that lie he should understand other lines of organized endeavor it is also vitally necessary that those engaged in ili other undertakings should understand the farmer without surrendering one particle of its independence the farm bureau is engaged in an informal exchange exclia of ideas with other organizations with the result that the true and vital vita I 1 character of the agricultural industry as well as tile the true attitude of the farm bureau as an organization Is s better understood than heretofore it is re recognized on oil all sides as a co conservative it serva tive force with one outstanding purpose namely the building of a more per permanent manen t agricultural industry and thereby the strengthening of all other meritorious undertakings and finally the tendering of a generous contribution to a healthier happier an and d more prosperous community |
