Built 1S93. th3 ranch hous? has always set somewhat, askew. Before he left on a trip, Wallace Cunningham, Cunning-ham, then cwn.r of the ranch, instructed his men to dig a foundation. Upan returning return-ing he found ihe foundation u as r.ot quite square with the compass (or the world; but figured he had so much time and labor invested that he would go ahead with the liulding. in it's early years, the ranch houe served as headquarters head-quarters for the LaSal area. It served as living quarters for Cunningham as well as cookhouse and dining area for nearly 3) ranch hands. Old timers in La Sal still remember remem-ber the bell which rang each day at 6:33 a.m. and 12:30 p.m , calling the long line of men to meals, diet Smith who presently works for Redd Ranches, recalls an incident when someone pulled the chair cut from under Sam, the Japanese gardner, as hi reached for the potatoes. When Sam sat back down, said Smith, he got more potatoes po-tatoes than ho bargained for. This was just one of many incidents in-cidents of good times and friendship that make up the fond memories of the old building. The ranch also served in the early days as post office and general community meeting meet-ing hall. Unt.vl the family got too large. Redd Ranches held their annual Christmas party there. It was to this building that Charlie Redd brought his bride, Annaley, and their f:rst child was born in the room now occupied by Charlie's Char-lie's office. The bulding was first used as an office after a fire in I!K3' destroyed the original off:ee building. The west end cf the ranch house was then converted into office space ar.d enlarged. "Ernie Scnderegger and his men don't have the proper sense of reverence for the history of the place as thoy tenr out the partitions," says Annaley Redd. ' But in the re dece ration, we are tryng to preserve and protect as much cf the historical spirit cf the building as we can. And so the venerable ranch house yields, if .not complet-ly complet-ly gracefully, to changes. Hopefully, the old gVrl will last another 75 years." |
