A t roups of 12 modern dancers come down from Salt Lake City for the week-tad week-tad to interpret a number of themes around the old cabin Site, on the swinging bridge, on Uie slickrock slopes to Delicate Arch and at Delicate Deli-cate Arch i'self. Students from the University Univer-sity cf Utah, they were gathered gath-ered here by Judy Maude-vil'.e, Maude-vil'.e, a student-instructor of dance at the U, working towards to-wards her Masters in Fine Arts. Judy herself 'is an accomplished ac-complished interpretive dancer dan-cer and performed one of the most fascinating solo pieces a "raven" in a dead pin-yon pin-yon tree. The proceeds were filmed for later presentation to sch.:cl tjouus children on -tt.e elementary level as exercises in creativity and self expression. Camaraman was James Giambruno at the Grand County School District Dis-trict Educational TV office. Jim recently developed his own very sensitive Interpretation Interpreta-tion around Turnbow Cabin on film for local classes. The creative arts in nature na-ture is one of the most overlooked over-looked opportunities in out National Parks and Monuments. Monu-ments. Except individuals with flioir cameras and a rare artist with easel, most visitors seem to view this out-ofdoors park experience as nature study, a lesson in 'geology, or the like. Perhaps it is because these landscapes are so overwhelming overwhel-ming or impos'ng or per-lljnps per-lljnps we hi the parks need to encourage people's imaginations imag-inations in new areas. But whatever, Judy's troupe chawed us a truly fascinating fascinat-ing side of Turnbow Cabin and the Arches, an excitingly exciting-ly human side. In many ways they seemed closer to the feeling of that landscape than those of us who "know" the names cf rocks and plants and animal life. And no one ever worked so hard getting to Delicate Arch ! |
