Show BONE DRY MEASURE PASSESTHE HOUSE LONG STRIDE FORWARD IN FIGHT FOR ABSOLUTE PROHIBITION LEGISLATION. Measure on Which Prohibition Advocates Ad-vocates Are Divided Raises Bar. rier Against Importation of Liquor Into Dry States. Washington. Absolute prohibition legislation took its longest forward stride in nation's history on Wednesday, Wednes-day, when the house, after two hours of uproarious debate, approved by a four-to-one majority a senate measure which would raise an iron-clad barrier against importation of liquor into prohibition pro-hibition states. It is expected to receive re-ceive the approval of President Wilson within a week, adding immediately to the "hone dry" territory about one-third one-third of continental United States. The provision is regarded as the most far-reaching that could be enacted enact-ed by the federal government, and as sweeping as would be possible tinder any method short of a national prohibition prohi-bition amendment. It would cut off entirely liquor importations, amounting amount-ing new to millions of dollars annually, annual-ly, into the large number of states which have forbidden manufacture or sale but have permitted importation for personal use. Advocates of prohibition are divided among themselves over the expeuiency of the step, some friends of the cause declaring so drastic a law would have a reaction effect. In the same way those who have opposed prohibition were not unanimous in opposition when the vote was taken. The roll call" brought cheers and cries of "bone dry" from all parts of the house, however, how-ever, and the result was greeted with a noisy demonstration. |
