Show i I : Farm Bureau Notes' ! By WALLACE SULLIVAN, Agricultural Agent for Emery ami Carbon Counties. ' To date there have been eleven lo- , cal farmers organizations perfected in. 1 the two counties and practically every club has taken up an active campaign , against the prairie dog. , ".More and better livestock" for Emery Em-ery and Carbon counties is the big project to be taken up by thrse or- . ganizations. This means livestock on ' practically every farm, more silos, ' more feeding, more feed crops, and 1 more dairying. Various projects will ' be carried out to promote this big pro- 1 ject. Then there will be some pro- t jects on standardization of the oat, ' 'wheat, and potato crops and on dis- ! ease control of each. Keeping a rec- 1 ord of the farm business is also to be encouraged by these farmers ortrani- J zations. Already about 100 farmers I have each taken one of the new farm . account books and have begun to keep J records of their business. 1 Emery county has organized its i county farm bureau, thereby federat- I ing all of the locals into one big conn- ! 1 ty-wide organization with H. A. Nel- son of Ferron as president. Peter . N'ielson of Huntington was elected to 1 the office of vice-president, and Ar- thur W. Anderson of Emery was made j temporary secretary-treasurer. A per-t per-t manent secretary ' and state director I will ba selected at a later meeting. ( The organization meeting was held I last Saturday and the next meeting will be held next Saturday, March ( 10th, at the courthouse. I Carbon county has enough local or- t ganizations so that their directors will meet in a few days and organize. 4 More Silos A great deal of interest Is being I shown by the farmers in the subject of silos. A number of farmers have J indicated their intention of putting up I silos this fall. The three silos at Fer- ron and the one at Emery are proving J a great success and the owners are I well pleased with the feeding results t obtained. I Ben R. Eldredge, U. S. agent in I dairying, will spend the week begin- ning March 19th in discussing this J tueston with the farmers. J Prairie Dog Extermination. Now is the best time to poison the J prairie dog. Several of the farmers 4 clubs are taking this up is a project. Why not everybody get busy now and make this a county-wide movement? ( A method for preparing the poison t was published in last week's paper. J (For the benefit of some of our read-j read-j ers who may not have preserved the t recipe referred to, we reprint the same ' below. Ed.) r 1. Mix thoroughly one ounce of slrychine alkaloid and one ounce of t baking soda. Sift this into -pint of tnin hot starch paste and stir to a J cool mass. 2. This starch paste ia made by dissolving one heaping tableapoonfu! t of dry gloss Btarch in a little cold water which is then added to -pint J of boiling water. Boil and stir con-I con-I stantly until a clear paste is formed. Add -pint heavy corn syrup and a tablespoonf ul of glycerine and stir thoroughly. 4. Add ''K -ounce of sacharine and stir thoroughly. 5. Pour this poison solution over 15 quarts of clean plump oats and mix thoroughly so that each grain of oats is coated. Prepare it 24 to 48 hours before using. For mixing small quantities quan-tities an ordinary galvanized Vash tub is convenient. 6. A teaspoonful of the poisoned oats should be placed near each prairie dog's hole on clean hard ground, letting lett-ing it scatter as it falls. Do not put the poisoned oats on the loose dirt about the hole or into the hole. Each quart of poisoned grain is sufficient to feed about fifty holes. Emery and Carbon Shoud be Big Feeding Counties Thousand of head of feeders, both cattle and sheep, are shipped each year from these counties to eastern feeders. Now that a new packing plant and stock yards are going up in Salt Lake it means that we will have a good market close at home for finished stuff. Two and a half million mil-lion dollars worth of pork was shipped into this state last year from the cast. The soil here demands more humus in the form of barn yard manure in order to make it more productive. Good feed crops can be grown here. All these things indicate that Emery and Carbon Counties should be shipping ship-ping out fat stuff and not shipping in so much prepared meats. |
