Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD The ten San Juan High School Sterling Scholar nominees Wednesday January 25, 1989 - Page 9 drama; Deniane Gutke, English; Janell Guymon, social studies; Gary Lyman, business; Kammy Pugh, industrial arts; Melissa Knight, home economics; Shelly Hughs, mathematics; and, Julie Martineau, foreign language. for 1989 shown above will compete in March with other students from the Southeastern Region at the College of Eastern Utah in Price, hosted by East Carbon High School. The nominees and their catagories are: Laura Shumway, general scholarship; Steve Black, music; Tracy Black, Janet Wilcox photo Lady Broncos will host region with good season record behind them San Juan Lady Broncos will not only host the Region 9A-2girls basketball meet, they will enter it with a good season record. Excited about being the first team in southeastern Utah to host a region meet, the Lady Broncos should do well in the games, scheduled for February 8, 9 and 10. In their past three games, the Broncos topped Whitehorse and Green River ) ) but went down to Cortez Against Whitehorse, Kammy Pugh scored 20 points; Tracy Black had 16; and Doriene Barfuss had seven. The Broncos lost a tough A (70-48- (65-32- (42-32- ). defensive battle and very physical game in Cortez. High scores went to Deniane Gutke, 17. Black seven. had 11, and Pugh had depth was a deciding factor. The 8 win boosted the Lady Broncos season record to 10-The game with Green River was the last home game for the season and senior squad members were honored in a pregame ceremony. Receiving applause were Tracy Black, Nedra Palmer, Tara Laws, Kammy Pugh, Beverly Brown, Deniane Gutke, and Tonya 70-4- Playing for the third straight day, the Broncos beat Monument Valley High scorers for this game were Black with 20, Gutke with 15, and Tonya Morris with 10. The game with Green River was exciting and emotional. High scorers were Black with 21 points; Stephanie Singer with 15; and Morris with 12. Two players on each team fouled out. San Juans bench 65-3- 4. 7. Morris. The Lady Broncos challenge the Red Devils tonight in Moab. Enter national beef Backyard grill enthusiasts and creative microwave cooks still have an opportunity to enter this years National Beef Cook-Of- f for a chance at thousands of dollars in prizes, but time is running out. The deadline for entering the contest is March 1. Top prize in the national event is $15,000 cash, with a total of $32,000 in prize money to be awarded. Contestants TAYLOR cook-of-f from all 50 states will compete which will be in the Cook-Off, held September 17-1- 9 Portland, Oregon. To be one of the contestants in Portland, entrants must first win their state contest in the Conventional category, or one of seven regional contests in the Microwave or Outdoor Barbecue categories.
