Parisians eagerly awaited today tho beginning of the trial of the gang of twenty-two automobile bandits who terrorized the French capital capi-tal and Its environs a year ago. They committed many murders and audacious robberies, until their leader. Jules Bon-not. Bon-not. "The Demon Chauffeur," was killed In April after a fierce battle against thousands thou-sands of police and troops. The crimes committed by this notorious gang wcro often of a most daring character char-acter and frequently were carried out ln broad daylight. The list of accusations against them liieludes twenty-two murders. Of the oecusod brought up for trial today to-day three were young womon Anne MallroJean, Marie Vnillomln and Barbo Lcelere. Extraordinary precautions were taken to prevent demonstrations of any kind. Every entrance to the vast "Palais de Justice" was strongly guarded, no one being permitted to enter unless able to fchow that ho had business In one of the j courts. The police patrolled the streets In the neighborhood, arresting all loiter- j ern. The assize courtroom was filled with witnesses, lawyers and newspaper representatives, repre-sentatives, only threo places being available avail-able to the general public. Tho proceedings of the day consisted of the reading of the lengthy Indictment, the rollcall of 304 witnesses, who were then dismissed until Thursday, and the examination of two of the accused by tho court. |
