Show LAYliE BATTLES SPAULGG AT FAIRGROUNDS Al Spaulding of Oakland and Rex I Layne collide in the 10-round main event at the Salt Lake Fairgrounds Coliseum Monday, Nov. 17. Spaulding, hard-hitting coast Negro who has mingled with some of the country's best heavyweights, is expected to provide stiff competition compe-tition for Layne, who will be making mak-ing his first start in his comeback campaign since he defeated Ezzard Charles last August in Ogden. While Spaulding's record is only-so-so, the fact that he has been in the ring with such lads as Leonard Morrow, Daie Haii, Turkey Thompson, Thomp-son, Willie Bean, Clarence Henry and Andy WaHcer, makes an even-steven even-steven record look not-so-bad. Layne, with stablemates Bob Dunlap, Dale Hall and Benny Flake, works out daily at 248 South Main in Salt Lake. And while the Layne-Spaulding battle gets top billing, there is enough action wrapped up in the supporting show to guarantee boxing box-ing fans a nifty show. Best of the lot might be the eight-round semifinal semi-final between Chuck Woodworth, returned missionary now at Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University, against war-horse Ron Whittle of the West Jordan stable. Woodworth is undefeated un-defeated as a pro, but will be meeting a toughie in Whittle, who has rewarded Utah fight fans with a slam-bang battle every time he climbs into the ring. Two other Californians will be in action Wild Bull Halsey, a free-swinging middleweight hitting Kid Leon in what could be the best fight of the night, while Billy Collins Col-lins of Oakland will trade punches with undefeated Max Chris of Tooele. , Dave Hamilton of Hill Field will j meet Wendell Haskell of Ogden in a six-rounder and Promoter Baron Von Stumme said that he will have another six-rounder making at least five fights for the Nov. 17 agenda, first of which will get under way at 8:30 p. m. Crater Lake Crater Lake, 2000 feet deep and over a mile high in the Cascade mountains of Southern Oregon, is set in the cauldron of prehistoric Mt. Mazama which was a monstrous mon-strous volcano, one of the highest peaks in the world. |
