Sagers said the leaves start to lost chlorophyll and become a speckled or mottled green color. The underside of the leaves show a dirty gray appearance. Some mite species form tiny webbing. Ultimately, the damage can be so severe the plant dies, he said. With the exception of the webbing, there are many other pests that cause the same symptoms as mites. "If any of the dust that is smaller than a pin head starts to crawl around, chances are good it is spider mites, he said. After correctly identifying the pests, Sagers said, control measures can be started. He warned, however, that before attempting artificial control measures, nature should- be allowed to run its course. Mother Nature does a better of job control than you possibly can, he said. There are many predatory mites that feed upon - the plant mites." He said it is impossible for a person to tell the good mites from the bad ones, but generally the good mites never get so numerous that they are easily seen with the paper test "Encouraging predatory mites is the first and often the only step necessary in controlling mites is the first and often the only step necessary in controlling mite populations, he said. However, good mites are killed right along with the bad ones by many common insecticides and miticides. As well, overapplication of pesticides is often enough to cause serious outbreaks of mites. Sagers said spraying the underside of leaves with water washes away harmful mites and is another good control method. In cases of serious outbreaks, he said, to keep in mind that mites are not insects and that most insecticides are not effective controls. The two most effective miticides available to the public are Kelthane and Vendex. Lendal G. Larsen Lendal Grant Larsen, 81, died August 7, 1991 at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St George, Utah.
