Show Messenger-Enterpris- M 7 r:o . Utah Highway Patrol to test new Chevrolet sports car Utahns might not expect to see their Highway Patrol troopers cruising in a sports car. But the latest UHP test program adds a Chevrolet Camaro to the fleet that, according to UHP officials, turns heads as we drive by. After decades of purchasing passenger cars only as patrol vehicles, the UHP changed direction in 1985 and bought Ford Mustangs. The cars were smaller, faster, and more fuel efficient. Now Chevrolet Motor Company wants a slice of the police cruiser market and has introduced its Camaro model with a police package. It not what the Utah driving public is accustomed to seeing us use for patrol cars, said Lt. Col. Gary Gunrud, assistant superintendent of the UHP. We want people to know up front that this is a legitimate police vehicle, and if the test program works out, there may be more of them. Troopers all over the state will evaluate the Camaro as it is moved between various UHP field offices during the 90 day test period.
