"I could only use the means within the reach of a blind man, and one of the principal means of increasing my size and weight which I adopted was uir, taking a larger and larger quantity into the lungs. I have cultivated breathing as the basis of life, so that now I suppose I can inhale and exhale as largo a quantity of atmosphere as any living man. That is the secret of the develop ment of physique to take into your lungs the whole amount of air which your lungs are intended to receive, and that is, in the cose of a man of fair chest pro'airtions, 330 cubic inches. The well built men in this country do not take iu 200 inches. "The first thing you do when you awake in the morning o sure you have a current of fresh air passing through your room. Remove the heavy bedclothes from your person, leaving only a sheet over you; lie as nearly flat as you can, draw up the knees aud relax the muscles of the abdomen. Then, with your mouth closed and your chin raised, in order to relieve all constraint about your breast, draw in all the air you can without violence, doing it gradually aud without painful effort. "Hold the air as long as you can, and breathe it out through the mouth or nose, iu the former case with effort. Close your lips as soon as all is out, and practise doing all your inhalations through your nostrils, never, under any circumstances, inhaling through the mouth. "I would rather drink the water left in a finger bowl at the close of a White House dinner than to take in one spoonful of Washington air through my mouth. Do this breathing while in bed in the morning for five or ten minutes. This has been my constant habit for a number of years. AIR, SUN AND EXERCISE PLUMBING, STEAM, AND "Air is my first prescription," continued Dr. Milburn. "The sun is my next. I often walk about with my bat off in the sun, and it was a practice of at noon. He said it stimulated his intellect, and that there was a vital and quickening power in the sun's rays. Thirty years ago I began to be bald. My father and All in need of first class Plumbing, jiile Btcam younger brother were as bald as the or Oas Fitting at palm of your hand when they were but I told them when they in REASONABLE PRICES forty; formed me that I was getting bald that I would never be so. I had resolved to should give their orders to prevent it, and I did. I never wear a & Co. hat when I can help it, and I am not as barefooted today on the top of my head as I was in 1800. I wash my hair whenDealers in ever I wash my face and hands. "I have a muscular exercise a light Pumps, Hose, Pipe, Brass dumbbell exercise," Dr. Milburn went on, "and have often used Indian clubs, Goods, Etc. and iu addition have some gymnastic Stevens Blk., opp City Hall movements for the arms, chest, legs, etc. 2r,IO, Wash. In battle Coreau generals are always accompanied by their servant. When he rides on horseback, a general has a servant on tacL side of his war horse to hold him in position, and a third stinds at the horse's head to hold the animal during the fight, or to lead it to the advance or retreat. These servants accompanied General Han to the gate of the king's audience hall. They left him there, and he walked alone ac ross the yard, with his head bent and his sword hilt toward the ground. He walked softly up the steps at the left leading into the room in which his majesty the king of Corea stood, bent down on all fours and bumped his head liefore him as a sign of the reverence lie felt for his king. Then, rising, be Stood, with Tlis SVtTftrT uplifted, at the right of the king, while my audience took place. At the close of it he backed out from the king's presence with liended head, and so continued til outside the gate, where he again sprang into greatness, and had a whole host of servants to do him homage. This oriental formality runs through all ranks of the Corean army. It is the ruin of the service. Corea will never have good soldiers until the officers learn military tactics by the same hard knocks that our officers do, and until they put themselves inure on a level with their troops, and work with them. Frauk G. Carpenter in Youth's Companion. Animals ami Karthrn:ike. The effect of volcanic phenomena on the lower animals has often been the subject of discussion. The records of most great eathquakes refer to the consternation of dogs, horses, cattle and other domestic animals. Fish and other aquatic creatures are .also much disturbed at such times. Iu the London earthquake of 1749 thousands of fish in the canal showed evident signs of confusion and fright. During the Tokio earthquake of 1880 cats inside of houses ran about trying to escape; foxes barked and horses tried to tear down the stable which confined them. There cau, therefore, be no doubt that animals know that something unusual and terrifying is taking place. More interesting than these are the observations sliowing that nearly all classes of animals are agitated just before an earthquake takes place. Horses and ponies have been known to prance around in their stalls in an uneasy manner, pheasants to scream and frogs to cease croaking suddenly just before a shock, as if aware of its coming. The Japanese say that moles show their fear at such times by leaving their burrows before the shock takes place, the pres-- ence of four or five of the little creatures on the surface in a garden being sufficient to cause a panic St. Louis Republic. 1'iilvcrsal Brick Press. A machine has been designed for making bricks aud tiles on the semi-dr- y The clay or material to be process. formed into bricks is fed into a hopper in a loose and granulated state. The finish is delivered as the charger returns to refill the empty mold. Each brick receives four distinct presses, whereby the air is thoroughly expressed. All the labor required is one man to tip the clay into the grinding pan, and one boy to take off the bricks as the machine delivers them. Among the various purposes for which this machine is employed, besides brick and tile making, aro the forming of purple ore, or "blue billy," into briquettes for the smelting furnace, the forming of nickel oxide into cakes for the assaying furnace, the forming of dry ceinenfcom-poun- d into blocks ready for ciinkering and the pressing of coal and coke briquettes. New York Commercial Advertiser. Forgot to Carry. A township treasurer in Ohio forgot to carry "9" in adding up his accounts, and the committee to look over his books found him $750 short, and nearly broke up his family before it was discovered where the error lay. The surprising thing about it is that he didn't "carry" the whole boodle to Mexico or somewhere else. Detroit Free Press. to tlai' of bt'Kinuiitir.
