There are about (,0J Chinei in New York and th immediate vicinity, and not more than fifty of theui are comfortable bo situated as to inM-i-- 4 beds in caje of rickness. They live in amall, poorly ventilated baeiiietita auJ cellars, and can with the greatest difficulty be persuadi.d to ebter th gvuerul hoeiiitala. Fifteen or twenty Chinese doctors prac tice in Mott strat-t- . Their methods are as crude as their ways of life. Their decoctions are things to he wondered at and avoided. Lizards and leetles aw their favorite reuieJr?. Fluid extracts J by of dogs' tails and tsnakes are also them. The Chinese Hospital association was organized to fill the want, which was an opportunity for these abases. The building at 43 Hicks street, Brooklyn, was hired, and Dr. Thorns was placed in charge. He is assisted by a Chinese nurse, who studies with him. and by three Chinese missionaries. Dr. C. E. Brnce, of New York; Dr. S. R. Fonnan, of Jersey City, and Drs. N. B. Sizer ami V. A. Littlo, of Brooklyn, are the attending staff. The association is made np of delegates from various churches in this and neighboring cities, and elects a board of managers, which have charge of the affairs of the hospital. The hospi tal is a three story brick building. There are three wards, one for one bed, one for three and one for four. Tlie King's Daughters furnished the largest one. Everything about the hospital is neat and well cared for. Dr. Thorns makes a special cff jftjo impress his patients with the value of light and air. Poor ventilation, he says, is the cause of half their Bickuess. Since the opening the hospital has received thirty-thre- e patients. No contagious diseases are treated. Most of the patients suffered from consumption, of which eight of them died. Those who are in the first stages of the disease are always advised to go home to China, and iu several cases this advice has been followed. Those who have the disease in its advanced stages nre cared for and rendered as comfortable as possible. The hospital has been full from its beginning, and has been fairly successful in the treatment of its patients. The hospital has had unexpected sup port from Mott street. Over $ 1,300 has been given by the Chinese merchants. The association hopes to obtain a larger building, and endeavors to obtain sub scriptions for that purpose. A contnbu tion of twenty-fiv- e dollars entitles a per son to membership in the association for one year. A contribution of $250 names and one of $3,000 endows a bed. Dr. C, E. Bruce, 450 Lexington avenue, is the treasurer of the association. New York Sun. t.i, Q'jIjES tiUPTUi. "'. CONTRACTORS AND BUILDERS. the n.i.;t., f 1. P. K. A. EirJr auai.atifa'i. .
