Our Published Every Friday at Fillmore, Utah 84631 By Progress Printing Company Town Susan FILLMORE Although am interested in many phases had to stick to just one profession think would be a gardener since all life depends on just how well the gardeners supply us with the proper foods Gardeners deal with living plants and see more beauty in everyday life thar most of the people who live in large cities and seldom see a real garden. Gardens really include ail plant life trees, shrubs, grains, vegetables, flowers of every type, soil and how to conserve and improve them, conservation of every type, birds and insects, both harmful and useful types, in fact, most medicines come from plants. We have to have a great deal of knowledge to really be excellent gardeners Most of our soils are so depleted that we have to be good chemists in order to test our own soils and know just what chemicals to add to our soils each year in order to raise certain foods and flowers, trees and shrubs Good gardeners are also good conservationists as they know that life cannot exist for very long, unless we learn how to conserve our resources We also know that we cannot disturb the balance of Nature or we cannot raise anything We are finding that out this year with the many insect pests which are devouring everything which grows. We have killed our birds by building so many houses and not planting enough tall trees in which birds can raise their young and not be disturbed by cats and other bird enemies. Birds will not build nests if there are bird enemies around. We used to have many more street trees and orchards than we have now. We build condominiums and there are so many people coming and going that birds will not nest anywhere, for fear of their nests being disturbed Each bird eats hundreds of insects and if we have no birds to eat the aphids, grasshoppers, earwigs, crickets, ants, flies, it won't take long until all growing things will be destroyed If we have to use insecticides to destroy the insects, we will all become poisoned along with the insects. Gardeners all try to encourage birds to live around their homes. National Council has a motto which says, "Every Home A Bird Sancturay " This means the homeowner plants big tall trees for nesting birds, they don't have cats, but they do have bird baths and fresh water where birds can drink and bathe as often as they choose. Owls and hawks keep our roads and field free from being overrun with rats, mice, rabbits, squirrels, and other rodents Each type of bird is fitted for destroying some type of insect It really doesn't matter what profession we choose, each of us should also be a good gardener. Then, when we are supposed to retire from our regular job, we will always have something real interesting to keep us busy, and in these days of terrible inflation, a gardener does not have to worry about starving to death. As Ruskin says, "The highest reward ones toil brings is not how much money he made from toiling, but what did he become through toiling?" In other words, what, did the toil make of him? It is not the hours we put into our work, but what counts is what we put into those hours We must all learn to look for the beauty which surrounds us and make life more beautiful and Providing our families with gardens interesting which will keep our children busy and help them to learn early in life how to work, how to produce and add to the well being of the world, instead of destroying the worthwhile things of life and being blind to the beauty which is everywhere if only we look through the eyes of a gardener. Elder Whicker was met at the airport Dean by his parents. and Marlene Whicker, his grandparents, Neldon and Anne Adams, his sister and brother-in-law- , DeAnn and Russell Wiley, and children, Clayson, Marie Maren, and Sarah; his brother and sister-in-laJohn and Jana Whicker, and children Jeremy, Jodi, and Jarret; and his sister and brother-in-laPaula and Kendall Quarnberg, and their son, Jake. This was the first time Jim had seen Jake, Karen, or Sarah. At the time of Elder Whicker's mission call, the Costa Rica - San Jose Mission consisted of the countries of Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Nicaragua. The mission was split during Elder Whickers mission into Elder two missions. Whicker had the privilege of serving in Honduras, in the cities of San Pedro Sula and El Progresso after which he was transferred to San Jose, Costa Rica where he worked in the mission office as secretary to President Murcn, he then was to transferred David, Panama where he spent the remainder of his mission. While all of these countries speak Spanish, Elder Whicker found the customs varied as did the countryside. The people all were friendly and hospitable. Elder Whicker expressed surprise at the growth and changes in his home town and says, "Its good to be home." He will resume his studies at USU this fall where he will be a Sophomore.
