Show A BLACK HILLS PIC NIC. IUriD Citv. 1. T., June 22. When wq emue to this town yesterday afternoon everything seemed quiet! and peaceful, but upon the ridge, a mile, west of town near a largo pinel iree, were the bodies of three young I men with ghastly blackened face8 turned toward the clear blue sky, the ropes dangling from the limbs of the pine tree, and the deep cut in their necks showing but too plainly how. they died. Wo one not acquainted with the facts in the case would even have thought such a fearful tragedy had taken place so recently. During the day (tho 20th.) two or three men went out northwest from town to get some logs, and were surprised, when about four miles out, by what they supposed were Indiana, judging by the way they rode their horsea. Being Be-ing with an ox team they left it and run for the woods, and by taking a circuitous route came into Rapid nearly scared to death. A party ol nueen wen-arniea men immediately started out, and found, sjven or eight miles out three white men asleep, with four horses picketed near them. They surrounded them, covered them with their rifles, and awoke them. They were taken to town and when ex aminedcoufessed thehorseiwerestolc-n at Crook. They were placed in a log cabin for the night; hut about 3 o'clock in the morning a band ol twenty vigilantes took them out, and when the people ot the town arose there they were, hanging dead, in plain sight of town. They were buried last evening. The following is to be their epitaph: A.J.A.llen, Louis Curry, Jas.Hall, Age 30 years. Ago 19 years. Agel'Jyears HOUSE TBISVXB BEWARE. Hare lies the body of Curry. Allen and Hall, Like other thieves they had tboir riso decline and fall; On yon pine tree they hurjr till dead, And hero they found a lonely bed. Then be a little cautious how you gobble horses up, For every horss you pick up hero adds sorrow to your cup; We're bsund to stop this business, or hang you to a man, For we've hemp and handa enough in town to swing the whole damn clan. Not very religious, but very expres-livo. expres-livo. A ranchman living on the Sidney stage road, a few miles south of Crook, w8 killed by tl.o Indians between be-tween his ranch and Crook, and tbe body, scalped and mutilated, left beside be-side the rosd. This happened day before yesterday, and the same day a freighter on horseback, and a little way behind the train, was set upon by a body of Indians and hia horse shot from under him, the ball passing through his pants between the knee and thigh. He got in a hole near the roadside and fired a few ahota and succeeded in overtaking his train. Many of the people believe the Indiana In-diana are going to be more troublesome trouble-some this season than ever before. |
