from a blind mendicant by the police a few days ago and which is now in their hands this letter was written by the mother of the blind man recently on the charge of obstructing the sidewalks it starts CATTLE RUSTLERS BACK AT OLD TRADE ephraim according to sheriff john knudsen cattle rustling i quite an extensive way is being done with startling regularity in the mountains and wild lands lying immediately east of this valley the sheriff last week returned from a crip into the different carbon county towns which lio across the mountains about east of valley where he went in of lost cattle or evidence which would tell of the killing of animals which arc missing he failed in this mission baft returns convinced of the fact that entile owned in this valley are illegally run down there from the mountains by the rustlers gold under misrepresentations to the meat marlet men and killed and all trace of them lost the plan pursued by thou who are responsible for ahe thefts ia a cunning one according 0 o the sheriffs theory tho ie who do the work are usually foreigners who arc unable to express clearly in english they come to this valley or to the moun bains and purchase small bands of beef batlle and drive them over the hill to the east side on the way there if straying mands unaccompanied by a herder are found they are allowed to mix with wit h those being driven and are taken along when the buyer is reached it he asks questions us to where the cattle were brought the imperfect language dodge is generally successfully resorted to to evade detailed answers and the animals are sold and killed and all in criminating trace of them is gone forever last year ono block grower alone in fairview loht or thirty head of beef cattle in the mountains and the officials presume they wont in the manner above described in the southern end of the county heavy losses of tho same kind wore reporter last complaint way not made to the until several months after ahe stealing for reasons and no possible trace of the whereabouts of tho missing animals was found it is too early for owners to know of their losses this year it there are i any because the stock is all on the mountain aej and no count 0 efthem has been made sheriff knudsen however is convinced that some have been taken this season as the owners will learn positively later on BEET CROP WILL BE HEAVY salt I ake sept 9 immense size it was cut in half and two trips made to drag it from the neighborhood v UTAH WON ON MERIT salt lake apt 9 united state s marshal william spry returned yes berday morning from balse chero ho went in time to hear tho speeches made by men representing the various cities that anxious to accuro the fifteenth national irrigation congress congre sg col john p irish presenting thy claims 0 sacramento mr cobb of texas who represented the people of las N M and harry st georgc tucker whose plea was in b halt of jamestown va were those heard by mn spry they wore all eloquent speakers said he yesterday but the most pleasing address that I 1 ever listened to that made by mr tucker of virginia the man has a wonderfully pleasing personality and while 1 I wa surprised that utah waa found in the jamestown ranks in the last ballot ia surprised cither because after listening to mr tucker I 1 felt like packing my grip and starting for virginia at once what about the utah exhibit well it was the most thing of the kind I 1 have over seen mr judd was fortunate in securing the services of an expert decorator from los angeles and he mado the most attractive looking booths I 1 have ovea seen tho display at tho last congress far exceeded tho one made at and I 1 do not wonder that the idaho people refused to allow the dark cup to be competed for after they had seen the utah exhibit there were somo individual exhibits that excelled 10 exhibits from utah but the size of tho display was the principal differ enco it only took a glance to convince the spectators that utah would win the sweepstakes prize and al others which she did and speaking of the dark cup and the refusal of tho idaho people to allow it to be competed for it seems to me it would be a good thing for the state of utah to rale about purchase a suitable cup and offer it as a prize at the sacramento congress for the best display of fruits and grains of course other states could hardly hope to compete with california next year but if sacramento won it in 1907 let tha name of the city or the state be engraved upon it then let it be competed for again the following year but the cup all the time to be known as the utah cup such a competition would be sure to excite friendly rivalry and result in finer exhibits we have heard so much about the fruit farms of idaho that I 1 went thero expecting to find orchards similar to those of california well 1 find them and I 1 am free to say that I 1 find the orchards of idaho in as good condition as those of utah nor do I 1 consider the fruit as fine as that grown in our own state tho horticulturists of utah have learned how to cope with tho coddling moth and other pests that formerly destroyed tho fruit and the trees they are raising the finest fruit grown anywhere in the intermountain inter mountain country butali won the cup at boise and there is no question that acho won it on merit GIVES ROBBER GOOD SCARE salt lake sept 10 A masked FIELDING WON FOR salt lake sept 10 salt lake found osborn about as often as was proper at walkers held yesterday but the stonewall stone wall infield of the park city bunch was too much and tho local went down in defeat by a score of 7 to 3 the gamo was a good one from the start but all tho playing was done on the miners side of the fence the Par kites played almost errorless half the flugo of dark at first in the seventh inning ibeling the only black mark chalked against them and had it not been for this error on the first sacker it is probable that salt lake would have gone through the game without a run that one error allowed one man to score and two more came in before the inning had closed LOGAN PIONEER DEAD logan sept 0 charles 0 carl one ot pioneers and one of the best known
