Show THAT CHRONICLE STORY tale told by the san francisco chronicle of the career and suicide of a man named william martin who is alleged to have married the daughter of ef a prominent mormon elder f is probably a piece of fiction so BO far as it seeks to connect martin with a respectable family of latter day saints the article gives no clue to the name of the family of martin martins Is alleged wife and bears other evidences of being an incorrect statement but if the tale be accepted as a correct narrative of circumstances that actually transpired it is still open to the objection of being flagrantly inconsistent and unjust in the conclusions it seeks to impress upon the mind of the reader one of these is that martins course in abandoning himself to profligacy and crime terminating in his putting an end to his own life was at least in part chargeable to his hia cifes father but the discerning reader will see in the Chro chronicles niclOs own statement reason to believe that martins whole life since his father in law knew himi him and probably long before had been at variance with rectitude he was a professional fess ional gambler who followed race meetings in pursuit of that calling A father in law laws s opposition would be very unlikely to give such a bent to a man not previously inclined in that direction he had borrowed money from a friend squandered it upon the inmates of low dives and had signi signified fled no intention to repay it this friend had once lifted him from the gutter only to see him fall back again and was shocked at his ingratitude the qualities martin displayed could not have had their rise in the father in laws dislike and it is reasonably certain that they dated back prior to his marriage it Is very evident thattie prominent mormon elder granting that he to is not a fictitious personage displayed commendable judgment in opposing the marriage of his daughter to martin and it is nothing to his discredit that he wanted martin to join the mormon church such a course pursued in good faith by Martin Martlin would have effected a complete reformation in his character and would have made of him an honest and virtuous man and a good citizen this attempt to make anti mor ismor mon capital out of the wickedness and suicide of such a depraved wretch as martin is plainly shown to have been is contemptible and mud prove abortive so far as affecting the minds of reflecting people is concerned |
