Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, February 7-9, 2018 The Park Record C-7 Historian to discuss hidden history of the West COURTESY OF THE BUFFALO BILL CENTER OF THE WEST Frederic Remington’s “Buffalo Bill in the Limelight” wil highlight a presentation at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts by historian Gregory Hinton, fellow of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and associate editor of the Papers of William F. Cody. Hinton will present “Out West,” a survey of hidden gay history and culture in the American West, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, 410 Campus Drive at the University of Utah. The presentation is part of Hinton’s acclaimed and trademarked museum program series “Now West!” which is comprised of programs encouraging critical dialogue around “Go West! Art of the American Frontier” from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and this consequential period in American history. The event is free and open to the public. He has written for television, stage and film, sang and danced in the showrooms of Las Vegas, and has headlined with symphonies all over the world. Ward has been named twice “Best Director of the Year” in Boston and has received the “Best Director of a Musical” and “Best Choreography” awards from the San Diego Critics Circle. Conductor Covington was recently appointed as the Assistant Conductor of the Utah Symphony, a position he began in the 2017-18 season. This past June, he completed his tenure as the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In that position he worked closely with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Opera Theater and was mentored by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Covington recently made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra sharing the podium with Ludovic Morlot. Covington, who began his career as Assist Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program, is a two-time recipient (2014, 2017) of a Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation U.S. He recently worked with the Nashville Symphony as a featured conductor in the 2016 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview presented by the League of American Orchestras. • RELATED EVENTS Audience members who arrive at 6:30 p.m. will join some easy dance lessons with local professionals Marcea and David Hess, as they teach the basics of the Waltz, Cha-Cha, and the Fox Trot in the lobby of Abravanel Hall.
