No need to leave the front porch to go on a safari. @neverend_creative So real @swanerpreserve Here’s a visual from the webcam of the low snowpack this year. Both images were taken the first week of February this year and last. This winter’s slow start is not only lousy for skiers, but for wildlife and plants on the Swaner Preserve as well. The subnivean zone, or layer of snow that provides cover and insulation for small mammals, is key for survival. Predators like hawks and foxes can easily spot their next meal in the frozen grasses and shrubs. The ermine and snowshoe hare are no longer camouflaged putting them at risk for predation. Winter snowpack is also important for our summer water supply. The melting snow provides a steady stream of water to the Park City area and the Swaner preserve. Many seeds that were dropped in the fall require a few months of cold weather and snow cover in order to germinate in the spring. With some recent snow, we have hope that winter will return for the late season, and we will be hoping for more! @marieandreesimardgoulet Old town Park City @natevineyard Good morning, Park City.
