Show Mail Robbers. On the night ot May SOtb, between 10 and 11 o'clock, two masked men stopped the south-bound stage about three miles north of Sevier river, and while one of the robbers held a gun at the head of the driver, Dan Whit-beck, Whit-beck, the other went through Wells, Fargo & Co's treasure box, and the register mail bag. He also cut threo mail bags, and examined the contents. con-tents. The rifled bags arrived in the city last evening, each having a large hole cut in it. The treasure box was smashed, and some express packages taken. The only passenger on the stage was a lady, whom the robbers did not molest. How much treasure they secured is not knewn, but it is believed the sum is inconsiderable. Wednesday evening about S o'clock two men, also masked, and believed to be the same who did the robbery the previous night, again stopped the stage near Chicken creek. They took $25 from M. B. Sowles, the Howe sewing machine agent, who was the only passenger. He told the ruffians that the money was all he had, whereupon they gave him a dollar. Fortunately they did not get his gold watch. The treasure box was broken open, but it contained nothing of value. The robbers cut open the way mail bag, but found nothing in it. All they got was the $21 belonging to the sewing machine agent. Mr. Sowles says the robbers acted as if they were new in the business, acd went at their work bunglingly. |
