Show November 11, 1981 9E Outdoor Wisdom from Hartt Wixom Tins for Pheasant Hunters By Hartt Wixom deer than pheasant habitat, with high elevations bringing cold temperatures shunned by pheasants. Best hunting is likely to be along the Weber River and adjacent farmlands in Morgan County up to Coalville country, and west of Kamas to Hcbcr City. The season, as with most of the state, is with a Nov. limit. In Wasatch County, Pheasant hunters looking eagerly forward to the Nov. 7 start have some challenges in Summit, Morgan and Wasatch Counties. When the 8 a.m. version of the 1981 ringncck roundup officially opens, it would be wise to work the lower country. Best pheasant areas within an hour or two away would include southern Utah County's corn and grain fields, or nearby cover all the way to Utah Lake. Best quail shooting is usually along the stream bottoms, with some on the oak shelves. Morgan and Summit Counties arc closed this year to quail hunting, however. In the quail quest, hunters may also see cottontails which arc legal" game until Jan. 31, 1982. Around Park City and above both Kamas and Hcbcr (Coalville is surrounded by mostly private land) there will also be public land opportunities for the forest blue and ruffed the coveted posted unit 1 at this find would You pheapoint. sants. however, off the posted units all around the streams and waters, including Hobble Creek and Spanish Fork River, and Utah Lake, in the willows and brush, as well as cattails permit, with Faith Baptist Church few' left and matted marsh grass. This is especially so after first hour's shooting. More birds can be found down the lower Weber River south and west of Ogden, and into Davis County. There are no deer hunts remaining, except for those holding antlerless control permits, and of course, the muzzlcloaders' early No- vember joust. In this one, the "mountain men" must hunt them with a blunderbuss much like those in pioneer times, a range of perhaps 90 yards, one shot at a time. But. with weather the way it has been many of these could well permit-holder- s icore at middle elevations in Summit, Morgan and Wasatch Counties. Anyone who tagged a buck during the regular rifle season is not eligible, however, and permits had to be purchased prior to that Oct. 17 opener. In the meantime, fishing is lot over, although lagging luring cold periods. Best hancc to take a trophy irown now is to fish warmer niddle of the day (a fact velcomed by most Novem-ic- r n fishermen) making to get well back under :utbanks and brushy lairs cer-ai- where cold water fish don't have to chase long distances. Every year large browns are taken right up to the Nov. 30 fishing closure on the Weber from Peoa down to Peterson in western Morgan County, and on the Prows from just above Deer Creek to mouth of Provo Canyon. A 10 lb. brown was subdued several weeks ago beneath the Charleston Bridge to inlet to Deer Creek, and several years ago a 20 plus pound brown was dredged up there. But, it is by no means limited to streams. Strawberry Reservoir probably yields more big rainbows and cutthroats now than at any time of .year. They can be taken on fly as well as bait or lure, but you will have to be prepared for some of the coldest fishing of the year as well. Strawberry usually ices up about the last week of November, and any place ,'ou can find open water wuld turn up a pounder rom bank or boat.
