MURRA- Y- Fred Van Der Veur, warden at Central Utah Correctional Facility, was elected 1997-9- 8 president of Utah Public Employees Association (UPEA) at a general council held April 24 and 25 m Ogden. "UPEA is our voice," said Van Der Veur, "It is the voice excellence in job promoting performance. It is the voice that reminds us Utah has fewer public employees than any other state. It is the voice that supports equitable public employee compensation. I am privileged and honored to represent that voice as your president this year." As president. Van Der Veur will preside over UPEAs State Board and work with the governor and legislators, promoting public employee issues. He will serve with Melanie Hall, immediate past president and Division of Rehabilitation counselorBoard of Education; Jeff Horrocks, first and Utah Highway Patrol Trooper; Larry Peterson, second and Salt Lake County Division of Substance Abuse treatment manager. Founded in 1959, UPEA is an nt nt member-baseindependent, association of municipal, county d and state employees. UPEA is committed to public sector employee excellence, recognition and compensation. Pioneer Pageant cancelled by Health Care Foundation funds that could be used to supequipment port the patient-car- e needs of the local hospital. In the past large donations to the pageant made it possible to mm a profit, but the large donations have not come nor could they see them forthcoming. Winn said, "We know that some people will be upset with our decision and to them we apologize, but we believe we must stay focused on our mission. which is fund raising, not pageants. Losing money on this. . MT. PLEASAN- T- The Board of Trustees of the Sanpete Valley Healthcare Foundation recently met and made the decision to cancel the Pioneer Pageant, according to a letter from George Winn, hospital administrator and pageant director. Winn stated that the decision was agonizing and was reached only after thorough discussion and consideration from every angle, based primarily on the fact that the pageant is not fulfilling its stated purpose to generate Gifted, talented program holds super Saturday event MORON- I- The first activity sponsored by the Gifted and Talented program will a Super Saturday held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 14, at North Sanpete Middle School. Registration deadline is Wednesday, May 28. For more information about fees and registration forms contact teachers or the school office. Students will participate in a activity before lunch and another one after lunch. They can choose from 10 different activities including building and launching a hot air balloon, firing a ceramic pot, watching model rockets lift off, radio controlled planes, math with homemade puzzles, leather work project, storytelling, a science activity, a musical experience and a nature-wildliactivity. two-ho- ur Input from parents is welcome, by contacting individual schools or members of the committee working on the program through the district office. The district themes is "Enhancing Education Experiences through Gifted and Talented Programs." Mary Mitchell and Cody Olsen. North Sanpete Middle School students recently won the logo contest for the newly created district program. Mary's picture featured a hawk head, while Codys logo stated. "You Can Fly If You Try." or any other event, obviously doesnt further our mission. We feel a deep sense of commitment to safeguard the assets we now have, knowing that those who have contributed money in the past would not want us to spend money they have contributed in unwise ways. Winn expressed his gratitude to the many people who worked so long and hard to support the pageant the past two years. Literally hundreds of hours have been given, and tons of energy to a worthy cause, he noted. He acknowledged many local businesses that had contributed financially to the pageant and expressed appreciation to the children and parents who have spent a great deal of time, money and effort. He hoped the children have benefitted from the experience and to those who have given so much so willingly. Winn expressed appreciation to Merrill Osmond who "has given more to this cause than anyone will ever know. An apology was made to those who might be adversely affected by the decision. "The greater good will be served by preserving and protecting the assets we already have in the furthering of their mission of fund raising," Winn concluded. fe The district has developed a philosophy and mission statement for gifted and talented students and is working on specific programs to be implemented over the next three years.
