PLEASANT-- - Students have been ready for summer for several weeks now. For the first time in several years the school year continues past Memorial Day. Here is what is happening at your school: North Sanpete High School Beginning today, May 28, and ending Friday,- May 30, are senior portraits for next year. Juniors are encouraged to get their senior portrait taken at their scheduled time. There will be a make-u- p day at registration in August, but there will be no pictures taken during the school year next fall. This picture is the one that is placed in the yearbook. Activity pictures will be taken during registration. Also, today is the Senior Send-of- f Dance. Students may get their yearbooks early at the dance - 1 Strictly circumstantial often have to remind myself that things are not 1 need to straigten out an in last weeks inaccuracy column. I made a conclusion from circumstantial evidence which turned out to be incorrect. I have been informed that the appearance of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Snow College was arranged for a couple of years ago. The concert was one of a series of statewide concerts performed in commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the pioneers arrival in Utah. The concert just happened to coincide with the dedication of the new Greenwood Student Center building. The two events didnt officially have a connection. The college was simply arranged for as the venue for the concert. I have absolutely no problem with that. You'll remember that last I took a little shot at the situation as a blurring of church and state lines. Not the concert by the choir, but the ticket distribution system. Armed with more knowledge, I hereby retract my criticism of that event. (By the way, I enjoy the MTC and frequently tune into the T.V. broadcasts on Sunday mornings.) week always as they appear. I remember hearing a reportedly true story about a young couple who were on a date. They wrecked the car and as I recall it, the young man was killed and the girl was in an extended coma as a result of the crash. The word on the street was that shortly before the accident someone had seen the boy making vigorous physical advances toward the girl. The rumor mill increased to the point that the previous good reputation of the boy was put into doubt. At long last the girl awoke from the coma. She explained the situation. A bee had gotten into the car before the accident happened. The boy had tried to "shoo the insect out while Those movements driving. were seen and misinterpreted by the people who originated the "improper advances" rumor. Inattention to driving while worrying about the bee caused the accident. It was a sad story made sadder by misinterpretation and misjudg-men- t. David Bradley, son of Ronald and Kaye Bradley, Moroni, received his Eagle Scout Award at Eagle Court of honor held May 11, in the Moroni LDS Stake Center. My family and I moved from the city of Clearfield in 1989 to I Sanpete County in hopes of getting away from the bureaucracy of the city. We found the county to be very peaceful and quiet. We understood that we would be giving up certain luxuries and conveniences in trade for the country life. Our concern though is about the road we live on. The county has been great in the past eight years to push the snow off for us at least once a winter, usually by February. (Whether we needed it or not.) There were many days when we didn't make it out of our driveway and our children never made it to school. We never complained. It was one of those trades for living in the country. This last year was a little better. The plow came several times. We figured it was because this was the first year we actually had a school bus coming down Sanpata'i Landing Nawspapar THE PMD (USPS 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Mt. Within our community, state and nation, grows a couple of dangerous parasites. One is apathy; not caring about events and people about us. The other is fear; people living in fear of being hurt if they do speak out. Both of these are slowly eating away at the strengths of our town, state and nation. Let us start in our small towns. We have children who are not m school during the hours of 8:30 a m. to 3 p.m. Other youth fee! it necessary to hang out until late at night, creating loud noise which disrupts many peaceful nights of sleep. There are those among us who feel it necessary to provide our youth with drugs, alcohol and tobacco, knowing soon the youth will be hooked on the substance. We are becoming a nation in distress! What can be done, if anything? When I was young so many years ago, growing up in a small town, we had a curfew and noise restrictions, as we do today. Other laws and ordinances were in place to protect the people from dangers. I was taught to respect these laws and those in place to enforce them and my elders in general. What has happened? Why do our youth seem out of control? I ask you and all our citizens: Who will be the brave ones to stand up for our youth and say I have had enough! What can be done? Recently on NBC and ABC, during youth these issues were programs, faced. In Chicago, there Telephone: FAX: 462-21- 462-245- Have I experienced bureaucracy in the county? Yes. I have also written letters, drawn up petitions and gotten signatures from concerned people who drive this road all the time. Ive talked to the mayor of the closest town, to see if he would discuss this matter with the county. We have gone to Manti ourselves and nothing has happened. Our road has been graded, which produces more dust and more mud when the rains come We need gravel. We need something more. I understand that the county has many din roads and little money. Maybe if someone is reading this and feels the same w'ay that 1 do, you know' that you're not alone. As of January 97, we had 39 people living on this road. There has never been any gravel added to our road since f have lived here. When it rains, snows or thaws we slip and slide with our vehicles. The farmers' tractors make ruts and washboards out of the road. All 25 of the children who live down here could not walk or ride their bikes anywhere without falling prey to the mud. What a clean, safe place for our children, grandchildren, grandparents and us to live. Yes! There is safety in numbers. I encourage you to become involved. Watch and be highly visible. Work with police and report suspicious acts. Speak to youth who are being unsafe, hiding in bushes and mocking the law by openly breaking the law. I am counting on you to keep an eye out for the safety of my children. If they do wrong, speak to them and me about it. Be a parent who will not say, "Not my child.
