But when we think of animais "crying" we think of it in terms of them being unhappy. Well, no matter how sad an animal might be, it doesn't cry. Man, of all living creatures, is the only one who cries to express emotion. It takes a thinking and emotionally sensitive person to be able to cry. Babies yell, but until they have learned to think and feel they do not cry. What happens when we cry because of sadness? Our emotion, instead of finding expression in words, is channeled into the mechanism that produces tears. It is a reflex action that happens despite ourselves. But the reason it happens is that the body has found it can express itself in this way when we can't, or won't, use words to convey what we feel. But we don't only cry when we're sad. Our eyelids are folds of skin that are lowered and raised like stage curtains by means of muscles. This curtain moves so quickly that it doesn't disturb our vision. We don't even know it's happening. In fact, the eyelids open and close automatically every six seconds during our lifetime. In each eye there is a tear gland, located over the outer corner of the eye. There are also ducts which carry the tears to the upper eyelid and canals which carry off the tears from front of the eye. The purpose of this is to irrigate the cornea of the eye and prevent it from drying - but it is exactly the same as crying.
