' ' ' rk 111 - K a 011 r oa I in - NEW YORK (AP) e Monweal reE'ypos opened baseball's first-eve- r tntry draft today by selecting slugger Reggie Jackson as the No, 1 choke among the 24 players available. : Like the others, Jackson achieved fiee agent status by playing the 1976 season without signing a contract. t After the Expos made him the historic first choice in a se action announced by Charles Bronfman, the club's board chairman, Jackson was etpected to be picked by 10 wore teams who would bid for his services suing Itith his old club, the Baltimore Orioles. : Jackson batted .277 with 27 home rtins and 91 runs batted in after being traded to the Orioles by the Oakland A's just before the start if the 1776 season. He has a career average of .267 ',vith 281 homers in 10 major league campaigns. The Expos, who had the poorest record in the National League last season, were followed in the drafting order by the Chicago White Sox, the , M of the Minnesota Twins. Campbell had a 17-- 5 record and 20 saves with a 3.01 earned ran average for the Twins last bottom club in the American League. The draft was to continue with the leagues alternating selections and teams picking in inverse order of last season's won-lorecords. The White Sox, represented by General Manager Roland Hemond, selected Oakland outfielder Joe Rad Rudi batted .270 with 13 homers and N RBI in his 10th season with the A's. The Atlanta Braves followed by selecting Gary Mathews, an outfielder with the San Francisco Giants. The Braves were fined 810,000 by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn at the end of the seasonb after being charged with tampering in preliminary negotiatiobs with Matthews. who batted .279 with 20 homers and 84 RBI for the Giants. The Milwaukee Brewers, the fourth team to choose a player, drafted Oakland third baseman Sal Bando, a veteran of 11 years with the A's. Bando batted .240 with 27 homers and 84 RBI last season. Next came the St. Louis Cardinals, who chose relief pitcher Bill Campbell season, his fourth in the majors. The Detroit Tigers picked second baseman Bobby Grich of the Baltimore Prio les. Grich batted .206 with 13 homers and 54 RBI and has spent seven seasons with the Orioles. Rudi was selected for the second and third times in the first round by San Diego and California on the next two picks. His Oakland teammate, relief specialist Rollie Fingers, was choisen for the first time by the San Francisco Giants. Fingers whom Oakland owner Charles O. Finlay attempted to sell with Rudi to the Boston Red Sox last season, record with 20 saves and a had a 2.54 ERA for the A's. Next, the Texas Rangers picked another Oakland player, outfielder Don Baylor. Baylor, acquired by the A's in the deal that sent Jackson to Baltimore batted .247 with 15 homers and 88 RBI in is only season in Oakland. The Chicago Cubs picked Gene Tenace of the A's, the only catcher available in the free-agepool. Tenace batted .249 with 22 homers and 63 RBI in his eighth season with the A's. The Cleveland Indians picked pitcher Wayne Garland, a winner with the Orioles last season.
