Art q ill j hold only so many pheasants.. As the pheasant's ' habitat shrinks, so does the population." Nish said. ::::: He went on to explain that as the pheasant rides, so does the hunter. "It would behoove the hunter to select a hunting s: area early and then make all the arrangements with ;' the owner to hunt on the property before the hunt. It's : poor judgment to go into the field on hunt day and hope to find an area to hunt. And it's even worse to hunt on private property without permission. "A lot of farmers open their lands now, but that , may not be the case in years to come if hunters abuse : the right," noted Nish. '4 Best counts from conservation officers have ','. come from the southern part of the state. The lowest ....figures come from the southeastern section. '' The pheasant season will open Saturday and for the most part (lose Nov. 14. Utah County, however, will close Nov. 10. State and federal lands subject to , ,. restrictions and closures are open until Dec. 5. Limit under all conditions is two roosters -daily , with four in possession after the first day. ,. When all the facts are passed and figures put to rest, the one big element on the pheasant hunt remains luck. They ignored all streamer flies fishermen could n In every tackle box there is a cast-of- f lure, never tried, always there. I had one of these. I lagged it to the feeding fish and a fish smacked it, broke water and walked on its tail. By then every fisherman along the shore, for half a mile wanted to know how I did it. By the time I took another, and then another, almost on successive casts, I had an audience. Seemingly I had solved the evening riddle. Just had what they wanted. After I had written a story for the Dardevle annual for an old friend, Ed Eppinger, he sent me some of his latest lures to try out on Utah fish. This was one of those lures a hammered blue-silvt, which to me is a copy of the 'Lure Jensen Krocodile, which has been so good on Strawberry Reservoir. It caught fish. I pass along that information for the good of those who might wonder what to do when flies fail. Try a lure. One of the major criteria, as to whether or not these huts will be called, is the weather. Five-da-y notice control hunts are called in areas that are typically overpopulated with concentrations of deer as they move out of the high country into the foothills. This migration is determined, in part, by the amount of available food and snowfall depths. Now that the 1976 Utah deer hunt is history, except for the possibility of some late limited permit hunts, what do you remember most about it? Most often it isn't "the getting of the deer." but the experience enjoyed in the wilderness with friends and family. It is the stories shared around a campfire, sleeping out under the stars and. eating food cooked some place else ,other than the kitchen range, Deer hunting has become more and more a family affair. It always has been a father-eo- n outing, and most hunters, if you ask them, still remember their first time out with dad. "fc-A- ,. .,2,, .
