Show The Summit May 9, 2003 The Sterling Scholar Competition for 2003 was held'at South Summit High School on April 29. North Summit's Sterling Scholar Candidates are: Carrie Rognan, Natalie Halt. Hillary Lewis. Haylie Peterson, AJ Roll, Mark Moody. Natalie Balt Natalie Batt has been chosen as Natalie Dcarden, Matthew Marsh. Abhy Hook, Kali Jones, Deatra Fawcett, Dusty Ercanbrack, Sara Bryant and Ashlee Richins. All candidates interviewed with judges in the afternoon between 12:30 and 4:00. Natalie Dcarden. daughter of (Irani and Sharon Dcarden. of I lender, wax chosen as North Summit's 2003 English Stciling Scholar. Natalie is a talented writer. She has been on The Mlir Whoop staff and a student writer for The Summit County Bee for two years. Natalie was the assistant editor of The Uiar Whoop last year, and is she is currently serving as the 2002-0- 3 editor. Miss Dcarden is very active in her school and involved in many other associations as well. Natalie has excelled in all of these areas. She is very excited about furthering her education after high school. Natalie's plans for the future include attending Rrigham Young University, beginning this summer, and pursuing an English degree in hopes of being a technical writer for a major corporation. Ahhy Dianne Hook Abby Dianne Hook is ftom Wansliip, and is the daughter of Dianne Hook and Gary and Lisa Hook. Abby is the Foreign Matthew Marsh has been involved in many activities throughout his stay at North Summit High School. He has participated in sports such as: football, basketball, wrestling, golf, and track. He was also involved with the math team for one year. He was involved with wildlife management projects and attends the Mule Deer and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations held every year. She has participated in rodeo, showing cattle, reining, SAE, CDE and proficiency. She is currently North Summit's I FA Chapter President. Hillary qualified for the finals at Slate Debate in SPAR two years in a row. Hillary has been involved in community plays. AJ is the son of Alan and Lisa Bell, and cuircnily resides in Hoytsville. AJ has been involved in Future Business Leaders of America, Debate, and Mock Trial. He has also participated in track and football. AJ is experienced in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite. Abby has lived in Caracas, Venezuela for six weeks. Abby has taught Spanish lessons to third grade classes, and writes to pen pals. In many Spanish-speakin- g high schx)l Abby has been a member of the math team, mock trials. Governor's Youth Counsel (GYC), drama and debate, as well as choir and the National Honor Society. Her future goals in life are to major in elementary education and have a minor in Spanish. Abby would love to become a teacher or a counselor because she loves to teach and help children. Deatra The judges critiqued portfolios and tried got to know candidates during the fifteen minute interview sessions. At 3:30, all Sterling Scholars attended a banquet held at the SS gym, after which portfolios were set North Summit's Visual Aits Sterling Scholar for 2003. She is the daughter of Kurt and Darlene Batt, of Coalville. Natalie has received many art awards including the Copper Plate at the Summit County Fair. She has additionally been a volunteer for the Arts Kids Program. Natalie has been a cheerleader for two years, and was the SBO for Publicity Manager. She is also a participating member of the National Honor Society and FBLA. After high school, Natalie plans to attend Westminster Collage and would like receive a degree in Fine Arts. Ashlee has organized and participated in several service projects that emphasize the importance of family. She has also attended many competitions and conventions revolving around families. Ashlee has been active in high school activities and organizations including FBLA and Mock trial. Ashlee is the president of FCCLA and was the Senior Ball chairwoman. In the future, she plans to attend college at UVSC and obtain an Associate's degree in Humanities. Kalina Jones is the daughter of Ken Jones And Joanne O'Brien. Kali is North Summit's Business Sterling Scholar. She was once the FBLA President and Treasurer She's been in FFA and Chair. Kali collected From Business $400 to donate to the fundraiser. She Raised and sold Miniature horses. She plans to attend UVSC Her future is undecided.
