Show Park aty News Thursday, March 17, 1983 Page All Park City Area 3 hjipud avme Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Onrean GhamberBureau attends ski show It happens every year in ' early March. It's the time when everyone involved in the ski industry hops on a plane or into the car to make his way to Las Vegas for the Ski Industries America Trade Show. For participants, it involves in-volves six hectic days of previewing and ordering next year's new ski equipment, equip-ment, apparel, accessories, or tools and supplies for repair shops, plus a chance to catch some of the most elaborate and extravagant displays in the trade show business. This was the 29th annual SIA Trade Show, at which participants generally spend two or three days to cover all the convention displays. They go to make some of their deals for buying next year's lines, to watch some of the most outrageous fashion shows, and to listen to dozens of sales pitches on new and revised products. This year, Deb Symonds, executive director of the Park City Area ChamberBureau, Cham-berBureau, joined Park City retailers and went to Las Vegas to witness the show first hand. Western Airlines donated the plane fare and, with the help of Bud Raymer from Pro Select Performance Ski Rentals, Ren-tals, Symonds was able to get into the show and do a bit of Park City public relations work. Her purpose in attending atten-ding was twofold: first, to talk with ski industry manufacturers and sales reps about choosing Park City as a site for their sales meetings, and secondly, to invite the apparel and equipment manufacturers to consider Park City as a backdrop for their catalog and advertising photo shoots. A first-timer to the Vegas show, but a veteran to conventions con-ventions in general, Deb Symonds had these reac tions. "By far, they were the most elaborate disolavs I had ever seen. The size of the exhibits surprised me, and the number of people the manufacturers had working at the booths. The materials they used (for the booths) were very classy teak wood, glass, carpeting and the way they displayed their products was visually so exciting." ex-citing." Deb took some time to wander through the show on her own. But through the help of area retailer, Bud Raymer, and Stein Eriksen, she was able to meet with manufacturers to discuss Park City as a location for meetings andor photo sessions. She spoke with company reps from Dynastar, Olin, K2, Salomon, Skyr, Fila and Sports Illustrated. "I felt very positive that Park City is well respected among ski industry manufacturers," she said. "Most of them mentioned that they had never known an area to approach them to use their facilities as a backdrop, back-drop, and were pleasantly surprised. Each company said that they usually have two or three meetings in the winter and one over the summer, and had never thought of Park City as a meeting site before. "I made some good contacts con-tacts in Vegas. And I think it was good that Park City, as a town, was visible."
