Show funeral Services Held In Springdale for Moses E. Gifford, Sr. .'SPRINGDALE, Utah Funeral services were held in the Spring-dale Spring-dale ward chapel Friday, July 21, at 10:30 a. m. for Moses E. Gifford, Gif-ford, 75, who died at his home in Springdale, Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p. m., after an extended illness. Bishop Alvin Hardy presided pre-sided and conducted the services. Music numbers included two violin selections by Carol Burgner and Florene Tweedie of Hurricane; Hurri-cane; vocal duet, "Unanswered Yet," by Lorene Crawford and Nellie Hardy. Speakers were Alvin Allred of Springdale, Boyd Dennett of St. George and LaFell Iverson of La-Verkin. La-Verkin. All three paid tribute to Mr. Gifford for his devotion to his family, his loyal support to his church, his honesty in the payment pay-ment of tithes and in his dealings with his fellow men and his clean way of life. Bishop Hardy also made brief remarks. Prayers were by Marvin Terry of Rockville and Maurice Cope. The grave in the Springdale cemetery ceme-tery was dedicated by S. K. Crawford. Craw-ford. Born June 18, 1869, at Shones-twg, Shones-twg, Washington county, Utah, was a son of Samuel K. and Laura Ann DeMille Gifford who were early pioneers to Utah. He moved with his parents to Spring-dale Spring-dale when he was a young boy and has since made his home wre, being the last survivor of (Continued on page eight) Gifford Funeral (Continued from first page) j his father's family. j On February 13, 1SS9, he was! married in the St. George Temple to Araannah R. Millett. Both have endured the hardships of Dixie pioneering and have been active in work of the community and of the L. D. S. church. Mr. Gifford filled an L. D. S. mission to the Southern states, served many years in the Springdale ward bishopric, was M. I. A. president presi-dent for 17 years and was ward teacher and a leader in the various vari-ous organizations. He had natural ability as a social leader and his poetic writings were often used in church and community programs. pro-grams. Two volumes of his verse have been published and a third volume is ready for publication. Having had poor health for many years, he has devoted his time to writing and with his pocket knife has whittled thousands thous-ands of small ornaments from discarded tooth brush handles, combs and other plastic material, selling many, of them. He has been an almost total invalid for the past four years. Surviving are his widow of Springdale; four sons, Moses E., Jr. of Draper, Larkin Gifford of Springdale, June L. Gifford of Salt Lake City, Carl M. Gifford of St. George; three daughters, Mrs. Kendall Gifford and 'Mrs.i Sterling Seegmiller of Springdale and Mrs. Orvel Allred of Lovel, Wyoming; 34 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. |
