Show Funeral Services Held Monday, July 24 For Joseph Barney VIRGIN, Utah. Funeral services were held in the Virgin ward chapel Monday, July 24, at 6 p.m., for Joseph Barney, 77, who died at his home in Virgin early Sunday, Sun-day, July 23, after several days' illness. Counselor Reed Spendlove of the ward bishopric, conducted the services. Music numbers included three vocal trios, "Oh, My Father", "Face To Face", and "Sometime, Somewhere", by Nora Bradshaw, and Bishop and Mrs. Alma Flani-gan; Flani-gan; and a vocal solo, "The Lord's Prayer", by Dwayne Gentry of St. George. Speakers were Bishop Alma Flanigan, Mrs. Sarah Spendlove and Leon Earl of Virgin; Jos. T. Atkin Jr., of St. George, and Bishop Henry Bowler of Gunlock. All three told of the pioneering life of Mr. Barney, of his kindness kind-ness to all with whom he associated, as-sociated, his deep interest in the welfare of his fellowmen and his patience and courage. Prayers were by Orin Ruesch and James Taylor of New Harmony. Har-mony. The grave in the Virgin cemetery was dedicated by Evan S. Lee of Virgin. Joseph Barney was born July 13, 1867, at Monroe, Utah, a son of Ben and Priscilla Barney. He came to southern Utah as a young boy and has devoted his life to helping reclaim this area. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lucy Etta Higgins Barney of Virgin; two sons, Joseph M., and Irvin H. Barney; eight daughters, Mrs. Eugene Leavitt, St. George; Mrs. Karl Spendlove, Mrs. Evan S. Lee and Mrs. Arnold Spendlove, Spend-love, all of Virgin; Mrs. Vernon Leavitt, Gunlock; Mrs. Mel Deem, Mrs. Paul Short and Mrs. Victor Ranch; three brothers, Dan Barney, Bar-ney, Idaho Falls; Jacob Barney, Elsinore; Joshua Barney, Monroe; two sisters, Mrs. May Higgins Dempsey, Idaho; and Mrs. James Neilson, Monroe; 45 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. |
