Show I AID ASKED FOR STARVING INDIANS Washington, Sept. 16. The Indian office of-fice today received from Senator Rawlins Raw-lins a petition from the citizens of Bluff, San Juan county, Utah, asking that further relief be extended to destitute desti-tute N'avajo Indians in that vicinity, and that Howard R. Antes of Aneth and Jens Nielsen of Bluff be designated desig-nated to assist Samuel L. Shoemaker in distributing funds made available by the Indian office some time ago. The petition states that Indians within a radius of fifty or seventy-five miles of Bluff have suffered from lack of water : k for several years past and need speedy relief. Inasmuch as the Indian agent insists thre is no unusual suffering the Indian office will take no further action at this time. It is admitted that there has Wn suffering among the Indians in f that vicinity, but there is ample em- Iloyment awaiting them if they. are disposed dis-posed to work, and the department is not favorably inclined to completely support those in a position to help themselves. The petition commends Senator Rawlins' efforts on behalf of the Indians. The senator merely asks that the requests be given consideration, consider-ation, making no recommendation. The secretary of the interior today re-reived re-reived a telegram from Governor Richards Rich-ards of Wyoming stating that furious forest fires are raging for many miles fclong the Wyoming-Colorado state line north of Pearl, Colo., and calling upon him to send assistance. The secretary finds that much public land is being damaged, and, realizing the importance 1 of prompt action, accordingly author- ized the local spocial agents to employ ' ) men to meet the emergency on the pub- lie domain. The funds available for fire extinguishment are nearly depleted. V owing to the frequency of fires this V summer, but in view of the extent of this conflagration emergency funds .ill be used. The department says this condition should induce congress at the next session to make liberal appropriation appro-priation for fire extinguishment as it had been sadly neglected heretofore. , |
