Show Page Four - The Pyramid - October 13, 1999 UHP report Local FFA to attend convention INDIANAPOLIS- - Over 49,000 Future Farmers of America (FFA) members and guests from across the nation are preparing to leave their "Signature of Success" on Louisville, KY., during the 72nd National FFA Convention, Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 27-3About 12 members of the North Sanpete FFA chapter will join fellow members from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands to develop premier leadership, personal growth and career success. Appropriately themed, "Signature of Success" symbolizes the agricultural education organizations desire to leave a positive impression on communities and the agriculture industry. This will be the first convention held in Louisville, KY. For the last 71 years, national convention was held in Kansas City, MO. FFA made the decision to move from Missouri to Kentucky due to the quality and size of the Over facilities in Louisville. $300,000 has been given by sponsors to make the transition from Kansas City to Louisville as smooth as possible. New features at this years convention include a fireworks food extravaganza, a nation-wid- e drive, and an agriculture ambassador program that places local fourth graders with FFA members teaching about the food and fiber industry and natural resources. Members will also have the chance to hear from speakers such as acclaimed actor Danny adventurer Glover, worldwide Jamie Clark, motivational speaker Dave Roever, and motivational humorist Emory Austin. will compete in Members career development events, be recognized for outstanding acin supervised complishments agriculture experience, and participate in leadership development workshops. 0. w Delegates from each state will discuss topics affecting the national organization and elect a new national officer team. Members will also participate in a career show, featuring over 300 exhibitors from agriculture, business and education. FFA is a national organization of 450,752 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. The organization has 7,503 chapters located throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing potential for premier leadership, personal success career grovvth and through agricultural education. Local, state and national activities and award programs provide for students to opportunities and skills knowledge apply learned in the classroom. He was treated at the Gunnison Valley Hospital for minor injuries. He was cited for DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia. On Oct. 5, at 8:56 p.m., Trooper Kevin Bradshaw, investigated a crash east of Mt. Pleasant. Larry Bristow, 53, Orem, swerved to miss a deer and rolled his vehicle. He was taken to Sanpete Valley Hospital by private vehicle for minor bruises and abrasions. Seat belts were worn. On Oct. 6, at 8:25 p.m.. Trooper Bradshaw made a routine traffic stop in Mt. Pleasant and arrested Calvin Winnie, 47, Mt. Pleasant, on charges of DUI. Winnie was booked into jail and the vehicle impounded. October named breast cancer awareness month SALT LAKE CIT- Y- Utah women are at risk for breast cancer and that risk increases with age. It is estimated that 800 Utah women will learn they have breast cancer this year and some 200 will die from the disease. Breast cancer could strike anyone according to an American Cancer Society press release. Low cost or free mammograms are available through the Utah Department of Health to women who quality. Until a prevention for breast cancer is found, early detection is the best protection. The best early detection tool is mammography. A mammogram can often detect breast cancer years before it can be felt with breast or by a clinical examination by a trained health care provider. Unfortunately, fewer than half of the women over age 40 in this country have regular screening mammograms. Complete breast cancer screening guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society are these women should begin monthly breast by age 20, have clinical breast exams every three years from age 20-4and have annual mammograms beginning by age 40. The American Cancer Society is the largest source of breast cancer research funding outside of the federal government. In addition to research, the American Cancer Society offers informative breast cancer programs and provides a variety of patient services, including Reach to Recovery. Last year more than 400 Utahns were helped by Reach to Recovery. Each year a few men also receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. The chair which was I d Brigham Young University with a EPHRAI- M- Dr. Paul Gardner will highlight the Snow College Convocation lecture series at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Crane Theatre. It is open to the public, free of charge. Gardners convocation lecture will focus on, "Lessons from Teaching and Learning." His inspirational message will highlight the lessons he has learned' as a teacher and as a studeriteas well as emphasize the importance g learner. of being a Gardner, this years recipient of the Jessie Madsen Brady Superior Teaching Award, is originally from Tyrone, PA. He has a passion for learning, and believes that through learning everyone can achieve their highest dreams. Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army where he trained as a medic. He was then shipped to Viet Nam where he served the country in the 173 Airborne Brigade. After Viet Nam he returned to Pennsylvania and graduated from Pennsylvania State University, anatomy to function. In 1989, his dream came true when he came to Snow College to teach. He currently teaches human biology, honors biology, anatomy, and artistic anatomy. Gardner has been instrumental in making the Snow College science program what it is today. STEEL TUBE U.S. Republican Chris Cannon Representative announced a $74,000 federal grant that will help agricultural researchers in Sanpete County find more profitable ways to raise poultry. The Agricultural Experimentation Station of Utah State University will use the federal money to construct a site to raise turkeys. Researchers will sample turkey populations to determine which strain of bird is the most profitable to grow. Cannon said these efforts will give agricultural developers in the Third Congressional District, which includes Sanpete County, economic advantages. "This project directly benefits the central Utah turkey industry. As a coordinated effort with Utah State University researchers and local agricultural producers, poultry farmers in the district will now be able to maximize profits, Cannon said.
