Show 2W The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday January 18 1987 finds students Chinese to Monopoly way By Ann Kilbourn Tribune Lifestyle Writer “Monopoly is a great game to play with Communists” according to Michelle Macfarlane As a teacher in China Miss Macfarlane educated Chinese students on the virtues and occasionally the vices of American society She also educated students on the finer aspects of Monopoly 'r "I always have been interested in the possibilities of teaching in China” she s$id A friend an attorney in China called Miss Macfarlane in February “My friend told me there was an opportunity to teach in China if I could be ready to leave in 11 days “Eleven days later I was flying there” Her departure was sudden and filled with risk “Of course it was frightening and I was quite nervous” she remembered “Rut it was exciting I landed first in Hong Kong where 1 expected to get a visa Officials there didn't have a visa for me and said I could pick one up when I arrived in China” Before she started teaching Miss Macfarlane had to devise a name more palpable to the Chinese tongue “My name in Chinese was ‘Ma Mi Xia’ A Spy School “At one time and fairly recently the Institute of International Relations was called the Spy School of China At the institute I taught college freshmen the basics of American culture I had no curriculum I usually would lecture for about 90 minutes Then students could ask questions” Her students had good English comprehension At the Chinese Academy if Miss Mafarlane talked too fast a student would ask her to speak more slowly In addition Miss Macfarlane acquired a working knowledge of Chinese “I could speak enough Chinese to travel in the country I went as far as Tibet” All About Bing The questions asked in class were interesting she continued After a lecture about the history of rock and roll Miss Macfarlane said “My students were quite interested in how popular songs and vocalists became They asked me to explain exactly how Biqg Crosby fit in the world of rock and roll That one was difficult” Many people in China have a great fondness for the song “Jingle Bells” “They don’t really celebrate Christmas they just like singing ‘Jingle Bells’ " At the Academy of Social Science Miss Macfarlane’s students were either master’s degree or PhD candidates “These students were essentially the cream of the crop I worked with these people on the basics of oral English They were quite knowledgeable One aspect of my teaching was working with them on better conversational English Equal Rights Debate “When it was time for midterms I assigned students a debate topic based on equal rights for men and women — the pros and cons In spite of China's apparent claims of equality between men and women it is a moot point One student did however make the observation that men and women were equal in one respect — they have no choice Decisions are already made by the THAT SCRAMBLED WORD GAME by Henri Arnold and Bob Lee Unscramble these six Jumbles one letter to each square to form six ordinary words I Information glut confuses bilingual consumers N” WEST LAFAYETTE Ind (UPI) — Bilingual consumers may seem to be as proficient in their second language as in their native tongue but when bombarded by details they have difficulty processing information received in their second language a new study reveals “We process information differently in our native language than in our second language” said Richard Feinberg a professor at Purdue University’s Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing Feinberg and his team of researchers designed a study to measure how people who are equally fluent in two languages reach “information overload” — the condition in which the more information consumers receive the less able they are to make good decisions When consumers were told four different facts about a hypothetical house purchase language did not make a difference However when they received 16 different facts those who received the information in their second language were as likely as those who received the information in their native language to choose the “correct” answer The “correct” answer had been predetermined by a questionnaire given to 80 people regarding what consumers want from a house The results of the study were the same for Americans whose second language was Spanish and for Hispanic Americans whose second language was English Feinberg believes that the results are particularly significant for Hispanics the largest ethnic minority in the United States He added that the study clearly shows that it is in thd" best interests of retailers and advertisers to present advertisements in the minorities’ native language HOW YOURTAXE5 ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP UNCLE SAM GAYCEL A ! rv government” Monopoly was one of Miss Macfarlane’s teaching tools The game was an interesting way to show her students aspects of American life Another aspect of American society will make its way to China in April In the spring China will get a close look at the concept of fast food when Kentucky Fried Chicken opens in Beijing “After teaching for two semesters spending almost a year in China I thought it was interesting I also knew it was time to go home “Still I am so glad I went" COMTIA — '¥ well-know- n Airport Visa Still nervous Miss Macfarlane flew to Beijing Met by her attorney friend she got a visa at the Beijing airport when she arrived “In spite of my fear and nervous flight it was so exciting It was well worth the risk” Leaving Salt Lake City in February 1986 Miss Macfarlane returned Dec 18 In Beijing she taught two semesters at two schools She was an instructor at the Chinese Academy of Social Science and at the Institute of International Relations — vi 'l a wl Now arrange the circled letters to form the surprise answer as suggested by the above cartoon PRINT YOUR ANSWER IN THE CIRCLES BELOW Now bock In oloek Jumblo Book No 17 It ovalloblo lor thla nawapapar PO Box 4306 Orlando FL 32(02-436- co 12(0 from Jumbla Includa your 0 nama addraaa and zip coda and maka your chock payable to Nawapaparbooka See Jumble Answer W-- 5 —Tribune Staff Photo by Frank Porschatis Michelle Macfarlane taught classes about America to the students in China She lectured on rock roll music Bing Crosby PICK PICK PICK PICK the Newspaper means to anyone who bus groceries Whafl Choose Your Child s Portrait §495 Choose two 8 x 10's three 5x7’s and twelve wallet size portraits from two poses in the original portrait envelope Plus 954 sitting tee Certain restrictions may apply Ask photographer lor details Offer valid until 13187 THE PORTRAIT STUDIO LAST WEEK YOU COULD HAVE SAVED $3187 BY CLIPPING COUPONS SUBSCRIBE NOW PHONE JW O uv u B mk ON YOUR GROCERY BILL Value determined by maximum di‘'ribdui°n pQ"m as d eTnefdsb advertisers © CII 1 m JCPenney loke Cottonwood Mall Valley Fair Mall Bountiful Ogden City Mall jv432 ’ I AST WEEK TO SAVE!
