From the Emery County Area. Deputy Martin Wilson of the Emery County Sheriffs Office attended the training as part of a yearly refresher course in dealing with hazardous materials. Wilson said the three-da- y training session is extensive, with both state and federal agencies on hand to instruct on how to deal with the any hazardous materials. Jimmy Dart Orchestra reunites at CEU to play big band era tunes Green River principal looks forward to retirement life By PATSY STODDARD Staff, Emery County Progress Larry Rowley has spent the last 34 years in the Emery County School District, but when the bell rings next fall he wont be back. Rowley was born in Cedar City and raised in Parowan. He went to Utah State and then on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints to the Western States Mission. L'pon returning from his mission, he went to school in Cedar City for two years. He received his bachelors degree about the same time Superintendent Blaine Peterson was looking for a teachercoach. Rowley said, I applied, and the job became mine, I was planning on staying for a year and then moving on to something else and that was 34 years ago. I taught school for 26 years and have spent the last eight years as principal at the elementary and at the high school. Education has sure changed over the years. It is tough. I have liked the community' and the opportunities to be involved in many things. We have a small high school. There are 100 students in grades. But, our students have 7-- 12 excelled academically and in athletics. Kalen Parsons was named MVP in both baseball and basketball. Our boys track team took second in state and the girls took 8th place in state with only three girls. The golf team took second in state. Jordon Bayles took four first places in state in the 100, 200, 400 and in the javelin. Our drama team won region and took fourth in state. Josh Rowley took first place in humorous interpretation for the fourth year in a row. Our band and chorus also did well. We are very proud of our students. We like to involve all of our students in activities. We have 90 percent of our studentbody who participate in extracurricular activities. Students must maintain eligibility by carrying a C average in all classes This has encouraged students to do more academically: Our students all read for 20 minutes every morning. At the elementary we have a program called Reading Counts, and the children take tests on the books and are given rewards and activities. It has been a very successful program. Our ACT tests have shown much improvement. There have been rough spots but I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with people in the district and the faculties and staffs at our schools. We have some wonderful people who really care about our students. They told me w hen I first came to Green River that if you stayed three years youd be hooked, and I was. Our district has gone from one of the lowest paying to one of the highest. Our school board is good to work with, they are people who care about education and about students. We have a nice facility here school. one of the nicest for a We have been in this building since 1981, and most visitors here think it is brand new. The building will last a long time if it is taken care of A once again created that unforgettable sound that brings dancers to their feet. In the enduringyears. the Jimmy Dart Orchestra has reunited to play for sec eral special mcasions at the college, and it was The Last Dance in the Old Gym in 1995 which brought alumni and friends from throughout the states back to the campus. On June 9, the fans, both old and new, of the Jimmy Dart Orchestra will be gathering for a ( lala Dinner and Dance at the new College Center where the ballroom floor will be cleared for dancing to that Big Band Sound. Postcard invitations have ieen mailed to more than 7.000 alumni and friends and the public is also welcome. New alumni and The CEU Alumni .Association and CEU Foundation Board have joined together to bring back to our alumni and community the Big Band sound of the all-tifavorite Jimmy Dart and appreciated. I am going to miss the association with the students the most I like being out in the halls visiting with the students, I dont like it when they have to come in and visit me. The thing I will miss the least is the lack of support we have had from some parents, some who dont care if their child is in school or about his education. These have been few and far between, luckily. I wont miss all of the new rules and regulations as far as guns and things like that. I remember when we used to go hunting pheasants before school and then leave the guns in the pickups during the day and then go out again after school. You cant do that any more and that is sad. We have our home up for sale and will relocate in the Parowan-Beavarea. We have children and family down there and we would also like to go on a mission for the church. My wife Rea Dawn works in the lunch room here and she will be leaving. Our last son at home. Josh will be going to college. I plan on doing some hunting, walking and just spending time with family. Were moving closer to the mountains where I hope to do a little more hunting. Do some of the things w e haven't had time for. Weve had a good life here, we've been active with our children in school and I was a bishop and 1st and 2nd counselor in the Moab Stake presidency at different times. I will miss my associations here and most of all I will miss seeingthe kids succeed, reflected Rowiey. Orchestra. A very young Jimmy Dart organized the dance band in 1939 and for 30 years the dance band played for countless events throughout the Carbon and Emery counties.it was The Band for any big event.
