Show A Very Solid Suggestion SALT LAKE CITY March 3RD 1885 Noticing an article in yesterdays issue of the DEMOCRAT inviting criticisms and suggestions I take the liberty of making a few remarks The great difficulty which the Democratic Demo-cratic Club of Utah will have to over come is the stagnation of political thoughts action and ideas which exists in the Territories and particularly in Utah The people of Utah call themselves Democrats This is only another illustration illus-tration of the looseness with which terms are used in popular language a naming of the thing without any reference refer-ence to its peculiarities It is easy to see that the policy of the Peoples Party is anything but Democracy in its nature The population consisting as it does largely of foreign born people has no knowledge of American customs or of the American government They fancy that every principle which is advocated and which antagonistic to their faith is specially designed to operate ope-rate against them They do not recognize recog-nize the fact that the principles which are emphasized in the platform of this club were recognized in tho country before be-fore Mormonism ever existed and before Utah ever became a part of the Union r as yet the majority of the population have no political convictions whatever They are therefore easily open to pressure pres-sure from the first persons of strong convictions con-victions who solicit them for their aid and sympathy It seems to me that the Salt Lake DEMOCRAT may exercire a powerful in flutmce for good in this Territory by publishing pub-lishing a series of editorial articles on Democracy and its past history Even if I could not tell the difference between I Democracy and Republican principles I could still give a good reason for adhering adher-ing to the Democratic party viz its past history J L Rawlins Jno T Kingsbury Jno H Burton and many others would no I doubt furnish articles on pure Democracy Democ-racy and the principles of good government govern-ment if requested S |
