LAWRENCE TOWNSENI) ASSISTS IX CHARITY PLAY Society people of the national capital are considerably excited over tho plav "About Thebes." that will be put on at the Belasco theater for one week, beginning be-ginning tonight. The play was written and will bo stnged by Mrs. Clifford Barney, Bar-ney, and according to eastern newspapers newspa-pers she has been ably assisted by Mrs. Lawrence Townsend. who Is well known to Salt Lake society people. Only amateurs, ama-teurs, selected rrom Washington social circles, will take part In the production, the proceeds of which arc to be dovolcd to charity. Mrs. Burney's special friend. Mme. Geraldlne Clifford. lias come from Paris to give a specially arranged dance for the occasion. The play opens with a. scene In the desert, with nn American tourist party on the road to Thebes to obtain occult wisdom from a famous wizard. The first act depicts nightfall on the desert, tho second shows tho Intrepid "trippers" "trip-pers" in the tomb of tho kings of Thebes, the third and last act depicts the ensemble en-semble of Nile maidens, American girls, mystics, Cook's guides, donkey guides, spirits of the Orient, temple maids, temple tem-ple dancers and the Oriental entourage In tho palace of the khedlve. where, to cap all. a sort of vandevllle entertainment entertain-ment gives everybody an opportunity to do a stunt. |
