Show Page 12 Student Life Monday May 17 1976 Cultural enrichment offered to ruralists Scientist study ozone layer Scientists from several nations will gather at USU September 7 to discuss with government and industrial representatives the dangers to life caused by depletion of the earth’s ozone 15-1- “One of the significant factors in attaining a quality and enrichment of life is the cultural arts In Utah however most of the cultural attractions and performances are found in the more popluated areas of the state especially those areas having close access to the resources of a college or university” noted Glenn Wilde assistant to the dean for Extension in the College of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences at Utah State Universiy Wilde proposed a solution The solution developed into the Utah Rural Arts Consortium funded by the Kellogg Quality of Rural Life Program The consortium includes participation from USU Snow College University of Utah and Weber State College Westminster and BYU are joining for next year The consortium forms a group which expands the available cultural resources by means of a continuing series of productions in rural communities — to date the communities have included Sanpete Wayne Sevier and Millard counties During the past month performances of “Knickerbocker Holiday” were put on in Fillmore and Richfield by Snow College the USU Choral toured Bicknell Fillmore and Richfield and the U of U took its Repertory Dance Theatre to Ephriam Richfield and Fillmore “Each of the participating communities has formed a local arts council to work with the consortium The council coordinates the culture programs which to date have been received successfully in the rural areas Part of the money collected for tickets remains with the local communities and is applied to community projects In Richfield the revenues are going to purchase hospital equipment and in Fillmore toward development of a new park According to Wilde a survey was taken in the individual communities prior to the formation of the consortium “We wanted to see if the rural residents would support culture activities The survey indicated 86 percent of those interviewed in four rural counties felt cultural arts programing should be included in a community’s development plan “Overall the respondents were generally favorable and supportive of a varied series of cultural arts programs and said they would support the series And they have” Wilde stated He feels both the communities and the institutions involved are benefiting from the experience “The community benefits by having the opportunity to see cultural activities and the institutions benefit by having their students participate in an educational experience of a touring production It also is a recruiting contact of future students” he explained This coming year the Rural Arts Consortium will become a part of the Utah State Division of Fine Arts program and “hopefully it will be expanded statewide over the next few years” Wilde concluded Red Cross The Good Neighbor layer The Jet Propulsion Laboratory Pasadena Calif and Utah State University are sponsors of the International Conference on the Stratosphere and Related Problems which is under auspices of Scholarship offered Applications are currently being accepted for the Edith Bowen Scholarships for junior senior or graduate students majoring in elementary education at Utah State University I'vo $1000 scholarships are being offered in honor of Edith the National Aeronautics and Chairman Administration Space is Dr Donald M Hunter Kitt Peak National Observatory Sponsors expect about 200 participants from 10 nations They will discuss the excess of ultraviolet light that reaches the earth because the ozone layer is damaged by high level aircraft flights fluorocarbon emissions and other factors A special feature of the conference will be a panel of scientists government figures and industrial representatives concerned with policy and social implications of stratospheric pollution The sponsors have invited Sen Frank E Moss Gov Calvin L Rampton NASA director James E Fletcher and other national conference Scientific and public policy problems will be discussed The conference will include sessions on laboratory studies of the chemistry of the stratosphere field measurements theoretical studies and studies of the aero-nom- y of other planets as they relate to Earth’s stratospheric problems Scientists in the atmospheric research program at USU will host the conference Dr Clayton Clark director of the Center for Research in Aeronomy is local arrangements chairman g?
